Taking an Adventure in Writing, Travel Writing Basics from the desk of Dena Weigel

Travel Writing beckons us to leap into the unknown!

Travel writing tells us to buy that plane ticket, jump on that train, or gas up the car to chase after the dream of earning a living writing about the many incredible places you find when you step outside your front door. But all dreams require a little forethought.

Here are our top tips for how to hit it out of the park with travel writing and make your journey compelling!

Getting the Story

1. Find the Story

Just like it is with all writing meant to sell, writers must stay abreast of trends to ensure their work is marketable.

Online and print travel magazines are a good place to start. Day trips are always a hot topic, and you can follow local and regional periodicals to stay up to date on what’s new in your area. A general periodical focused on travel will provide you with a wider view of interesting places to explore.

Travel associations and travel and tourism offices are a treasure chest for travel writers! Their representatives work hard to steer you in directions that are timely, interesting, and full of possibilities for a great article. Cultivating these relationships will reward you with insider information, guided press tours, and future writing opportunities.

Remember to reach out to your Circle of Influence, too! Reaching out to your traveling friends and associates to find the places they are most interested in will also give you valuable insight. Where do they want to go? How will they spend their time when they get there? What questions do they have that you can find the answers for? The answers to these questions will be a catalyst for a compelling article that reaches the right readers.

Finally, you’ll want to consider your own interests when looking for your next travel story. Think about what you enjoy when you travel, and contact those groups directly to find out what is new and exciting so you can help promote it for them. If the relationship goes well, they may come to know you as a dependable writer and eventually reach out to you with story ideas!

2. Research

Good research will help you find an interesting angle for your article and lead you to those bits of lesser known information that will elevate your article above the others focusing on the same topic.

Gather the information given to you by the tourism associations and other groups, then do a little research on your own to find interesting details to give your story a unique spin. For example, if you are writing about the best hiking boots to wear on extreme hikes, find out who the designers are and what makes them experts in hiking footwear. By doing this you’ll be telling readers of your articles you are an authority on travel topics they are interested in.

3. Get the Inside Scoop

People love hearing from the locals, and locals love telling people about places and events they love near their home.

Adding quotes from people who are involved in events or owners of restaurants, hotels, or activities will provide depth, color, and validity to your article. Convey their enthusiasm for their events/activities and let the reader feel it through compelling writing.

Not only will you be creating a great article with quotes, readers will be given an insider’s view into the experience as they learn the basic information that will enable them to book their next big adventure! Get out your old journalism notes to get the “who, what, why, where, and when” information to fill in your article and up the value of the content, then find one or two quotes that will add interest to your article, and be sure to cite the person if required.

4. A Personal Perspective

It’s time to put yourself into the writing!

What was your experience like? Seek out those special moments that really connected with you and tell them as if you were talking to a friend who is about to visit the same place. Use your five senses to infuse your article with compelling, sentient writing the reader can connect with and feel confident they understand what you’ve experienced. Keep in mind, you want to be honest in your writing, and keep negativity out if you want to be invited back for future writing gigs.

A Closer Look at Instructional Literature

Ani’s Heart is weighed against a feather before Anubis in The Egyptian Book of the Dead

The first recorded genre that could be described as self-help was called “Sebayt” an Egyptian style of reading that translates as “teaching.” You can even think as far back as The Egyptian Book of the Dead which is an instructional guide for Ani as he begins the journey through the afterlife.

But do they work?

Aristotle believed that reading had healing capabilities. While self-help book buyers may not be cured of whatever ails them, feeling better is not to be entirely discounted. People hate their jobs, fail at love, fear getting old, worry about their weight; self-help books address and try to assuage these problems. Life hurts, and the promise that self-help books make is a relief of that hurt. (read more from Publishing Perspectives here)

The genre was popularized in modern days by the well known work How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

Did you know? An updated version of Carnegie’s book is being release 5/17/22. It’s available for preorder now!

Carnegie never made it as a fiction writer, and his initial idea to give lectures based on what would become his bestselling work was laughed at by universities. However, he certainly can be said to have succeeded as a writer as people continue to live by his suggestions to this day.

Why Write an Instructional How-To or Self-Help?

LitHub has an excellent article about this, and here’s one of the more relevant parts of it.

The self-improvement industry has been analyzed in a variety of academic disciplines, but its literary import has not received the attention it demands. The omission is even more glaring in light of the fact that self-help guides are among the most lucrative book genres of the past 30 years, with approximately 150 new self-help titles published every week.

The competition for book sales is sky high!

Like the entire publishing industry since the Kindle came out in 2007, the Self-Help industry is blowing up! With Chanticleer’s goal of Discovering Today’s Best Books, we aim to shine a light on the best How-To books, becoming a link in the circle that helps those books find their way into the hands of readers everywhere! We do this through our Chanticleer Int’l Book Awards and through Editorial Book Reviews.

I remember when working at Village Books the book that was sold back the most was Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It always came in with at least three other bags full of books from the same household. It seemed to be working! – David

Marie Kondo is an incredible success story with her lifestyle changes and instructions on organization. She did so well that she had her own Netflix series!

Kondo recommends keeping 30 books max in your house. We can’t quite bring ourselves to do that at Chanticleer.

OVERCOMING The IMPOSTOR

The author was surprised in a first meeting at a new job to be referred to as an “expert.” It raised doubts in his mind about whether he had earned such a title, but it also forced him to do things he’d never done before and succeed in the process. But the voices in his head persisted, even as he went from accomplishment to accomplishment. His shadow, The Impostor, told him he didn’t know how to do a certain thing; moreover, he was making it up. The Impostor relentlessly mocked him, saying that just been lucky, he wasn’t a “real” businessman at all. When he learned about “Impostor Syndrome” – “a psychological pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments” – he realized that we all have an “Inner Impostor” that needs to be recognized, dealt with, and banished.

The I & I Book Awards recognize emerging talent and outstanding works in non-fiction for instruction, guidance, self-help, how-to, and insight. The I & I Book Awards is a division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs).

Chanticleer International Book Awards is looking for the best books featuring HOW-TO, Guidance, Travel Guides, Cookbooks, Instruction, Insight, Self-Help, and more. This books have been put to the test and the best will advance to be declared winners of the prestigious I & I Book Awards.

Editor’s Note: Some works have been moved to the new non-fiction division titled the Nellie Bly Book Awards. This new division is in response to the request from the Chanticleer International Book Awards judges to acknowledge the many outstanding works that were entered into the Instruction & Insight Book Awards and the Journey Book Awards for Narrative Non-fiction. The Nellie Bly Book Awards recognize outstanding journalistic works and investigative pieces. After reviewing the comments from the judges along with their suggestions, we decided to recognize these works and create a more fitting division in the CIBAs — the Nellie Bly Book Awards. The Chanticleer International Book Awards Grand Prize and First Place Category Winners 2018 (CIBAs)
We are deeply honored to announce the 2018 Winners of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs). The winners were recognized at the annual Chanticleer Authors Conference and Awards Banquet Ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the luxurious Hotel Bellwether, Bellingham, Wash.

We want to thank all of the authors and publishers who participated in the 2018 Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs). Each year, we find the quality of the entries and the competitiveness of the division competitions increasing exponentially. We added a new level to the judging rounds in 2018—the SemiFinalists. The CIBA judges wanted to add Semi-Finalists as a way to recognize and validate the entries that were not selected for the very few First Place Award positions within each genre division.

PublishDrive, a global distribution platform, and Hindenburg Systems, audiobooks and podcasts software, awarded more than $30,000 (cash value) in additional prizes to the 2018 Chanticleer International Book Award winners. Thank you!

A Recap of the CIBA Selection Process
- There are 16 divisions of the CIBAs: 14 fiction genre divisions and 2 non-fiction divisions.
- First Place Category award winners were selected for each one of the 16 divisions from an overall field of titles that progressed to the Semi-Finalists positions from the Shortlists, the Long List, and the infamous beginning slush pile rounds.
- One Grand Prize award winner was selected from the First Place Category Award Winners for each of the 16 CIBA divisions.
- One Overall Grand Prize award winner was selected from the 16 divisions of Grand Prize Award Winners
All CIBA Semi-Finalists in attendance at the CIBA awards ceremony were recognized with their respective division at the CIBA awards ceremony along with receiving a Semi-Finalist ribbon and digital badge and a significant discount to attend the Chanticleer Authors Conference.

Additional Prize from the DONALD MAASS LITERARY AGENCY

An additional prize was awarded to the 2018 CIBA Grand Prize Award Winners by the Donald Maass Literary Agency (that represents more than 150 novelists and sell more 100 novels each year to leading publishers in the U.S. and overseas). Donald Maass has offered “a high priority submission” process opportunity to the 2018 Grand Prize CIBA winners and a “priority submission” process opportunity to the 2018 CIBA 1st Place Category winning titles for consideration by his agency.
