          • Rebecca Dwight Bruff – Chanticleerians in the News! Award Winning Trouble the Water to be preformed July 9-Oct 2

We expect great things from our authors, and they always deliver!

Trouble the Water by Rebecca Dwight Bruff with the Overall Best Books of 2020 Grand Prize Ribbon

Overall Grand Prize Winner for her wonderful book Trouble the Water, Rebecca Dwight Bruff’s work now comes to life on stage!

Trouble the Water follows the incredible Robert Smalls who was born enslaved. He liberated himself and others, served five terms in the US Congress, and introduced compulsory public education. He changed countless lives.

The 202 Best Book Grand Prize Badge for Trouble the Water by Rebecca Dwight Bruff
Want to compete for the prestigious CIBA grand prize? Enter today!

His story – his life and legacy – is inspirational and aspirational. And mostly unknown.

Bruff reveals the true story of the life of Robert Smalls. Set in the Civil War era, we follow Smalls as he navigates through a life of enslavement, the dangers of war, and a desperate attempt at escape. Trouble the Water is a moving tale of slavery, perseverance, war, freedom, and love.

Rebecca Bruff earned her Bachelor’s degree in education (Texas A&M) and Master and Doctorate degrees in theology (Southern Methodist University). In 2017, she was a scholarship recipient for the prestigious Key West Literary Seminar. She volunteers at the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort, South Carolina. She’s published non-fiction, plays a little tennis, travels when she can, and loves life in the lowcountry with her husband and an exuberant golden retriever.

A Green tree encircled by the words "Will Greer's Theatricum Botanicum"

Her play opens at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum where it will run from July 9th – October 2nd. Freely Adapted by Ellen Geer and Directed by Gerald Rivers. If you’re in the area of Topanga, California during its run, we recommend checking it out!

If you can’t make it to the play, the book and audiobook is now available wherever books are sold! The audiobook, narrated by Director Gerald Rivers, is worth giving a listen!

We hope that, like us at Chanticleer, you will be moved by Robert Smalls’s courageous life of thoughtful, compassionate leadership

Why did Bruff write this story?

I’m a writer. I believe that the stories we read and write and tell have the power to shape and change our lives. I believe that – because a story changed my life.

Nine years ago, when I lived in Texas, I visited the lowcountry. It was my first experience here, and it was brief, but we made time for a carriage tour through the historic district of Beaufort. And that’s when I heard a little bit of the story of a man named Robert Smalls. I’d never heard his name, and I’d never heard the story. But he intrigued me. His courage, and his heroism, and his contributions, and legacy intrigued me.

His story ignited my curiosity. Curiosity led to exploration, and exploration led to discovery, and I discovered how little I knew about our history. I discovered how little I understood about the experiences of enslaved people in our country. I discovered that some stories get amplified, while other stories get silenced.

Congratulations once more to Rebecca Dwight Bruff on her Overall Grand Prize Win, and we’re delighted to crow with you about this most recent accomplishment! We look forward to what’s next!

Official Announcement of the Chanticleer International Book Awards 2019 Semi-Finalists (the 2019 #CIBAs)

We have just completed the final sweep of all seventeen divisions of the 2019 Chanticleer Int’l Book Awards submissions. All of the divisions’ Semi-Finalists have been announced.

Each one of the Semi-Finalists has been notified by email from the president of Chanticleer Reviews, Kathryn “Kiffer” Brown at  KBrown@ChantiReviews.com.

Additionally, all 17 divisions’ Semi-Finalists have been posted on the Chanticleer Reviews website (see links below), have been sent out in  e-newsletters to our entire subscriber list, and have been announced on Chanticleer’s Facebook page and on Twitter social media platforms.

We always check for stragglers, the inevitable stray, and late ratings coming in from judges (they do this as a labor of love for books and authors), and other anomalies that are just the nature of tracking the thousands of entries that we receive despite our state of the art integrated software program for tracking, DRM, and interactions with the judges.

The works that made it to the 2019 SEMI-FINALIST are currently in the final rounds of judging to determine which ones will move forward to the limited First Place Categories and the coveted grand prize position for each division. The Overall Grand Prize for Best Book will be determined from the 17 divisions’ grand prize winners.

An Important Announcement from KIFFER – the Chanticleer Authors Conference has been postponed until September 3 -6, 2020 (from the original date of April 16-19, 2020) due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation. This postponement was decided on March 12, 2020.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we are scrambling with the rescheduling and the logistics. All registrants have been notified by individual emails. We will post updates as we know more.

We are currently working on the schedule of CAC events and CIBA announcements for the new dates. Thank you for our patience and understanding during this  unique event that is presenting new challenges on many  fronts for everyone.

All Semi-Finalists in attendance at the 2020 Chanticleer Authors Conference that is scheduled to take place April 16 -19, 2020 will be recognized. CAC 20 is the sponsor of the Chanticleer International Book Awards banquet and ceremony. The First Place Category Winners and Grand Prize winners for all seventeen divisions will be announced at the banquet and ceremony that will take place the evening of Saturday, April 18, 2020. The Overall Grand Prize Winner will be announced and presented with the cash prize of $1,000 USD on that exciting evening.

(We’ve added a division, so standby for the new graphic — thanks!).

          • CASH PRIZES $$$ for HOLIDAY 560 words MAX – WRITING CONTEST with TELLABLES on Amazon’s Alexa

CASH PRIZES $$$ for HOLIDAY 560 words MAX – WRITING CONTEST with TELLABLES on Amazon’s Alexa

Tellables is accepting stories with a HOLIDAY theme for any holiday occurring between November and January 1st in any country!

The WINNING HOLIDAY DOUBLE CHOCOLATE STORIES will be published on Amazon’s ALEXA and will receive CASH prizes! There is NO entry fee.

Tellables is seeking individual chocolate stories on their My Box of Chocolates voice app.

My Box of Chocolates voice app pairs delicious virtual chocolates with bite-sized stories.

The stories in the My Box of Chocolates voice experience run less than two minutes. Each one is narrated by an imaginary chocolatier, using a synthetic text-to-speech voice (not human recordings). The storylines generally revolve around interesting or humorous occurrences involving the customers in the chocolate shop.

Conversational Stories – a new voice-driven platform in story telling.

The stories Tellables publishes in their voice app are not “audio stories.” They are “conversational.” What’s special about these stories?

Conversational Storytelling is made possible by platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The underlying technology allows a storyteller to pose questions to the listener and understand the listener’s spoken response. For us, conversational stories are spoken narratives where the narrator interacts directly with the listener. This interaction can take many forms, but it generally involves drawing the listener into a conversation by asking a question related to the story.

See Tellables’ blog post on What’s a Conversational Story? for more details.

Now, finally, on to the Holiday writing contest!

We are excited to announce the Tellables Holiday writing contest. As with their Halloween Writing Contest, they are looking for stories they can publish on their “My Box of Chocolates” voice/audio experience on Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant’s Okay Google app.

Here is a link to the Chanticleer authors who won the Halloween contest for micro-stories https://www.chantireviews.com/2019/10/30/tellables-voice-driven-stories-selects-4-chanticleerian-authors-for-spooky-halloween-micro-stories/

And Tellables is offering CASH prizes.

The individual chocolate stories Tellables publishes in their voice app are “bite-sized,” with a maximum of 280 words. Sometimes, however, they publish stories in two parts. Part 1 and Part 2 are each represented in our virtual chocolate assortment by two pieces of the same type of candy. The listener needs to hear both candies in order to get the full story.

For the Holiday Writing Contest, Tellables is looking for two-part stories. Each part (piece!) should have a maximum of 280 words. Visit the Tellables’ website for more information and to enter! http://tellables.com/blog/

Voice technology offers new and exciting opportunities for storytellers and readers. Passive listening is no longer the only option. Now two-way communication between the storyteller and listener is possible.

This is a great opportunity to dip your toes into the emerging world of voice technology!

A little bit more information about the Emerging Voice-Driven Devices and the Opportunities They Offer for Writers

Voice assistants like Amazon Alexa are equipped with powerful speech recognition and language understanding. We leverage these technologies to help authors and storytellers engage audiences in new and exciting ways.

While it’s still early days for voice technology, sales continue to grow for both the Amazon Echo and the Google Assistant line of smart speakers and smart displays. Consumers seem unfazed by media reports of privacy infringements, so it appears these devices are here to stay.

Here is an article with 22 Takeaways for Authors from the Silicon Valley Annual Internet Trends Report – Kiffer Brown

VOICE-DRIVEN CONVERSATIONAL STORIES FOR TALKING DEVICES

For those of you who are not familiar with the Digital Book World conference, it is mainly a business-to-business conference that specializes in content distribution and platforms that include books, ebooks, digital books, audiobooks, podcasts, audiovisual delivery, blockchain, voice, and other media delivery systems.

And since Chanticleer prides itself on expanding the digital footprint of the authors who use our services, we’ve found DBW to be indispensable for keeping us updated on the latest in publishing technologies so we may inform you, dear writer and reader.
