Charles M. Russell painted the cowboy seen on Chanticleer’s very own Laramie contest badge. It is one of many such paintings he did that encompassed the Old American Wild West. An advocate for the Native Americans, Charles M. Russell also helped establish a reservation in Montana for the Chippewa people.

The Last Man: A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery
    By Thomas Goodman

In The Last Man: A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery by Thomas Goodman, four men in a small, depression-era Texas town lay in wait to carry out their unique plan for a holiday heist.

It’s December 23 and a man in a Santa Claus suit walks into a bank. But rather than his bag full of Christmas surprises, he’s brought a gun. With the element of surprise on their side, the robber and his two partners would collect the cash, while another partner waited in the getaway car. It all seemed so simple.

At the time, Texas bankers—in order to deter crimes such as this—promised a $5,000 reward for any dead bandits, “and not one cent” for the capture of a live one. Should anything go wrong, the possibilities for disaster were clear as a Greek tragedy. but what could go wrong?

    Guarded Hearts
    By T.K. Conklin

Guarded Hearts by T K Conklin is a sensual romance in the Wild West, with all the passion and excitement natural to the setting.

Sparks fly between a man with an outlaw past and a woman with a terrifying gift to heal or harm. Strykes is a man haunted both by a violent childhood and his time in an outlaw gang. But he has found a place in Rimrock, where he met LaRisa, an auburn-haired woman whom the townspeople have labeled a “witch” due to her healing herbs and rumors of her “powers”.

LaRisa has kept her distance from people, afraid of her gift of healing touch that can turn dangerous, even deadly. But, when she comes to town to deliver her medicinal herbs, she makes her way to the livery with tasks for Strykes such as shoeing her horse or fixing a spring in her wagon. He is only too happy to oblige the auburn-haired beauty. The attraction between them is instantaneous, yet they both are hesitant to act on it, fearing they would hurt the other– he from his violent past, and she from her “witch” power.

Robert Smalls’ life should have been one for the history books.

Smalls was born a slave in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1839. When the first shots of the Civil War were fired upon Fort Sumter, Smalls was an experienced helmsman aboard a small cargo ship plying the coastal waters of South Carolina and the neighboring states. Once the war broke out, he found himself working to support a cause that kept him, his wife, and their children locked in chattel slavery.

But in a daring escapade that fell somewhere between a raid and a rescue, Smalls planned, with the help of his fellow crew members (also slaves) aboard the CSS Planter, to abscond with the ship, its cargo of munitions taken from Fort Sumter, and bring their families. The plan was to sail the ship as though its white officers were still on board, pretending to be carrying out their orders—at least until the ship was out of the reach of Fort Sumter’s guns.

    Seven Aprils
    By Eileen Charbonneau

Disguised gender identities, warfare, and thwarted romance all play a role in this many-layered novel, Seven Aprils, by award-winning fiction author Eileen Charbonneau.

When Tess Barton, a hardscrabble farm girl, saves the life of a man attacked by a panther, she and he little realize how fated this encounter will prove. Ryder Cole, the man she saved, moves on, pursuing a medical career just as the United States seems destined for war. Intrepid Tess will move on, too, when she learns that her widower father sells her in matrimony to an old, brutish shopkeeper. A wise crone cuts Tess’s hair and garbs her in men’s attire. Reborn as Tom Boyde, who will soon, strangely, meet up with Ryder and become one of his “men,” conscripted into Lincoln’s armies. Tess/Tom shows promise as a medical assistant with some undeniable cooking skills, and together with two other conscripts, they make the team in the Union’s army hospital units.

    Blood Moon A Captives Tale
    By Ruth Hull Chatlien

Ruth Hull Chatlien’s historical novel Blood Moon: A Captive’s Tale shines a light on two worlds trying to coexist in the 1860s Minnesota, that of Westward Expansion and white settlers, and that of the complex network of Sioux tribes dealing with starvation and disease. We follow her protagonist, Mrs. Sarah Wakefield, as she is thrust unwillingly into the midst of the Indian Wars.

Based loosely on the life of real captive, Sarah Wakefield, Chatlien explores both sides of this conflict, through the eyes of our terrified hero, who does what she must to save her life and the lives of her two small children. The first-person narrative in present tense places us in the thick of Wakefield’s narrow escapes, and the presence of the constant threats to her and her children.

  • Celebrating Mary Shelley’s Birthday: A Look at Her Literary Legacy and Impact on the SciFi and Paranormal Genre

A Chanticleer Happy BirthdayThe Shelley Awards for Paranormal Fiction features an image of Mary Shelley at her writing deskTo the Mother of Science Fiction and all things Paranormal

    Mary Shelley!

    The Update

We long have wanted a person to name the Paranormal Awards after, but it’s difficult to make the decision. However, two years ago, we floated the idea of Mary Shelley, and since then we’ve been waiting for the stars to align. And now they are!

    What to know

If you have received a Paranormal Award in the past, that is still good! You can reach out to us for new graphics that say “Shelley Awards” instead for Finalists, First Place, and Grand Prize Winners. You are also welcome to keep using the “Paranormal Awards” branded promotions you have won! Those are still good, and we will continue including information about the change in name for years to come to help alleviate confusion.

    On to Mary Shelley!

Mary Shelley, one of literature’s most revolutionary figures, was born on August 30, 1797. It was a time of extreme weather in her birth city of London. Today’s meteorologists have determined the city was experiencing a “very thundery” year, with strong rain and hail storms that caused flooding throughout England.

Dark clouds casting shadows over dark streets. Is it any surprise Shelley would grow up to write nightmare-inducing, Gothic novels like her groundbreaking story Frankenstein?

As we honor her birth, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on Shelley’s extraordinary literary contributions and the enduring legacy that continues to inspire writers.

    A Literary Trailblazer

Mary Shelley’s entry into the literary world was as unconventional as her most famous creation. The daughter of renowned intellectuals William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, Shelley’s upbringing was steeped in new, radical ideas during a time of science and paranormal romanticism. She married author Percy Shelley in 1816 and traveled to Lake Geneva that summer for a honeymoon at the home of another writer, Lord Byron. It was there that a writing challenge among friends led to the creation of Shelly’s most famous work, Frankenstein.

The Birth of a New Genre

Published in 1818, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was revolutionary for its time. Inspired by her own miscarriage and the death of her mother eleven days after Shelley’s birth, Frankenstein is not just a tale of a scientist who creates life but a profound exploration of ambition, responsibility, and the moral implications of scientific advancement.

Shelley went onto write “The Last Man” and “Valperga,” exploring the themes of dystopia, history, and social critique, as well as numerous short stories, essays, and travelogues. Her style, characterized by rich, evocative prose and a deep psychological insight, earned her a respected place among the Romantic literary elite during a time when women authors were not typically recognized.

    Celebrating Her Life and Works

As we commemorate Mary Shelley’s birthday, we acknowledge not only her literary achievements but also her courage and vision. Her life was marked by personal trials and societal challenges, many brought about by the scientific advancements that fueled her imagination. Yet she channeled these experiences into profound contributions to literature.

In celebrating Mary Shelley’s birthday, we honor a trailblazer who, though born into a dark and foreboding world, was inspired to write stories that changed the landscape of fiction and brought about the new horror genre, leaving an enduring imprint on our collective imagination.

Happy birthday, Mary Shelley, Birthday cake, Frankenstein

    Happy birthday, Mary Shelley!

We’re committed to maximizing our authors digital footprint through long tail digital marketing. Through our prized Editorial Reviews, we do this with our Chanticleer Under The Hood SEO Boost.

We use the same technology for our CIBA posts combined with reposting. A lot of reposting. Every time an author’s book advances on our list we promote it on our website, social media, and in a newsletter blast. Why?

Your book is worth being discovered!

You put in so much work to create this book, we want to treat it with the respect and care it deserves! That’s why we take you through the Levels of Achievement.

The tiers of achievement for the CIBAs

Our normal posts tend to have double the response and interaction rate of comparable businesses. The CIBAs posts announcing when work advances in the Book Awards is five times greater than our regular posts and still double that of comparable businesses that run writing competitions. And that is for every Award post that goes out. The way we do this is simple.

First, we give each division breathing room on Social Media, on our high traffic website, and in our Newsletter. The consistent promotion and spaced promotion keeps every post prioritized instead of devalued by search engines for over-posting.

We also try to tag each winner on Facebook within their CIBA divisions. Again, the spacing prevents Facebook from devaluing our posts and lowering your exposure.

    Under the Hood with SEO

Publishing is the Hub of Technology. There’s a lot great at Chanticleer, but our emphasis on being ahead of the technical curve is something we pride ourselves on. Our Robust SEO system that we use for both our CIBAs and our Editorial Reviews are the cornerstone of using technology paired with promotion.

You can see the article we put together specifically on the All In One Search Engine Optimization Tool (AIOSEO) we use here.

While most SEO tools recommend a score between 60-80, we always strive to exceed that, with many of our Book Award posts receiving a score over 90. We do this through our rigorous attention to detail surrounding the optimization of heading distribution, sentence length, alternative text, key phrases, meta data, tagging, and much more. There’s no replacement for basic elbow grease when it comes to the secret sauce that maximizes our posts so that web crawlers love them and promote our authors’ writings as much as possible. We know from client feedback that it really makes a difference!

    Human Beings Make the Difference

A rare photo of the Chanticleer staff all in one place. And, yes, that is a bag pipe under the table.

We are a small business with huge reach that works hard to address every question, email, and comment we receive directly with care, empathy, and expertise. Putting together an internationally attended conference with authors from India, Australia, Portugal, the UK, and other countries takes hours of dedication and careful planning. We bring that same energy and enthusiasm to the CIBAs and promoting the books submitted to us year round

A book covered in flower petals with the pages formed into a heart

Most of all, the Chanticleer Int’l Book Awards is a labor of love!

Love of Books, love of words, love of storytelling, love of authors,

And love of the writing community!

Thank you to everyone who submitted to the 2023 CIBAs and to the outpouring of submissions that have come in to the 2024 CIBAs already! Every year the quality and intensity of the competition is better than the year before, and we are always blown away by the incredible work you send our way.

Thank you for making Chanticleer possible and trusting us with your work!

    There’s still time!
