The 2022 CIBAs Paranormal Book Awards Short List for Supernatural Fiction
The Paranormal Book Awards recognize emerging new talent and outstanding works in Supernatural Fiction. The Paranormal Book Awards is a division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs).

Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs) is looking for the best books Paranormal books featuring magic, the supernatural, weird otherworldly stories, superhumans (ex. Jessica Jones, Wonder Woman), magical beings & supernatural entities (ex. Harry Potter), vampires & werewolves (ex. Twilight), angels & demons, fairies & mythological beings, and magical systems.

These titles have moved forward in the judging rounds from all 2022 Paranormal Supernatural Fiction Long List to the 2022 Paranormal Book Awards SHORT LIST. Entries below are now in competition for 2022 Paranormal Semi-Finalists. All FINALISTS will be announced and recognized at the Chanticleer Authors Conference (CAC23).

The First Place Category Winners, along with the CIBA Division Grand Prize winners, will be selected from the 25 CIBA divisions’ Finalists.

Jessica Jones, Wonder Woman), magical beings & supernatural entities (ex. Harry Potter), vampires & werewolves (ex. Twilight), angels & demons, fairies & mythological beings, and magical systems.

These titles have moved forward in the judging rounds from all 2022 Paranormal Supernatural Fiction entries to the 2022 Paranormal Book Awards LONG LIST. Entries below are now in competition for 2022 Paranormal Shortlist. The Short Listers will compete for the FINALIST positions. Finalists will be selected from the Short List. MEGGE Of BURY DOWN: Book One of the Bury Down Chronicles by Rebecca Kightlinger – Historical Fiction, Paranormal Fiction, Coming of Age

Megge, a young girl living in thirteenth-century Britain, struggles to find her own path in Megge of Bury Down by Rebecca Kightlinger.

The daughter of a healer with both practical and spiritual abilities, Megge should by rights have become her apprentice on her sixth birthday, as had others in her family before her. Megge should have become a woman of Bury Down, the sacred burial site of the previous owners of The Book of Seasons and The Book of Time. Her mother, one of two twin girls, had been entrusted with The Book of Seasons, an ancient tome of knowledge of the physical world created and maintained by mystical seers. Brighida, Megge’s cousin and the daughter of her mother’s sister, has been charged with keeping and inscribing The Book of Time, a celestial guide.

The girls, almost identical in age, are expected to take up the mantle as protectors. However, while Brighida is an obedient and skillful apprentice, Megge fears the power contained within her mother’s book.

Megge hears strange voices and feels frightening sensations whenever she touches the Book of Seasons. She refuses her destiny, much to her family’s confusion and dismay, and chooses instead the life of a shepherd and weaver. The only person who seems to support Megge’s choices is Morwen, the elderly bard and shepherdess who lives with the family, but even she, with her cryptic messages, seems to be pushing Megge toward another terrible fate.

However, when dangerous strangers start spouting hate and disturbing the peaceful village near Megge’s home, she may have no choice but to embrace her role. As destiny and fate work against her, Megge must decide whether to take the easy path or become the person everyone else believes her to be.

Megge’s fear underpins the story, stemming from the unknown, the fear of what happens to her when she first touches the book but also the fear of the fate for which everyone thinks her destined.

This novel follows Megge’s growth as she grapples with that fear throughout her early years. Initially, her determination not to become a healer seems to her mother to be nothing but childish stubbornness. However, with age and a series of misfortunes, her fear transforms into worry over what she may inadvertently do to injure her family.

Her fear, and Brighida’s perfection – both physically and as an apprentice – create a level of self-consciousness that makes Megge doubt her every ability. As a plain, shapeless girl, Megge thinks herself beneath the role of a seer, choosing instead to hone her skills in the field and at the loom. Though her work helps give the family much-needed funds, it is far from the mystical beauty that her family expects of her.

She doubts her path as a Shepherd, with an unshakable voice inside her saying that she truly is a protector.

Megge sees glimpses of what she might become. This second-sight angers and confuses her as it both confirms her abilities and brings into sharp focus her role in destroying the ideal life she enjoys with her family. She often debates following her mother just to feel loved, as though she belongs in this family of exceptional women with astounding abilities. But the fear of her looming disaster weighs more heavily than any rejection could.

The world-building in this series is exceptional. The reader is immediately immersed in the complex environment of Bury Down.

As the daughter of twin caul bearers, Megge and Brighida should be sworn protectors of twin books at once the same and yet vastly different, just like the girls themselves. Their family obligation dates back one thousand years, and the novel begins with a scene from that era. Herbalism combines with spiritualism to create a world where both work seamlessly together in a completely plausible way.

The history of Murga, the first seer, weaves with Megge’s present in a retelling that allows the reader to learn of Megge’s important role just as Megge does. The rich tales spun by Morwen also develop the plot and create engaging moments of realization. It’s a world that will leave the reader thinking about Megge’s story long after closing the novel.

These titles have moved forward in the judging rounds from all 2021 Paranormal Supernatural Fiction entries to the 2021 Paranormal Book Awards LONG LIST. Entries below are now in competition for 2021 Paranormal Shortlist. The Short Listers will compete for the FINALIST positions. Finalists will be selected from the Short List. All FINALISTS will be announced and recognized at the Chanticleer Authors Conference (CAC22).

The First Place Category Winners, along with the CIBA Division Grand Prize winners, will be selected from the 24 CIBA divisions’ Finalists.

The 2020 Chanticleer International Book Awards (#CIBAs) Overall Grand Prize and Division Grand Prize and First Place Category Winners | Part One
We are deeply honored and excited to announce the 2020 Winners of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs). The Finalists were recognized at the Virtual Chanticleer Authors Conference and Awards Ceremonies, and the First Place Category and Grand Prize Winners were announced June 5th, 2021 by ZOOM webinars based at the luxurious Hotel Bellwether, Bellingham, Wash.

The 2021 Chanticleer Authors Conference and the 2020 Chanticleer Int’l Book Awards Banquet and Ceremony was originally scheduled for April 21 – 25, 2021. Each year, Chanticleerians from around the globe come together to celebrate and cheer each other on at the annual CIBA banquet and awards evening at the luxurious Hotel Bellwether that is situated on beautiful Bellingham Bay, Washington State.

However, in order to celebrate being able to meet in person in even a limited capacity (due to the fact that we all able to be vacinated in time), we postponed the First Place Winner and Grand Prize Ceremonies to June 5th, 2021 at the Hotel Bellwether with local Chanticleerians attending cheering each other on along with cheering on the virtual attendees. Champagne was poured and shared as the 2020 CIBA Grand Prize Division Award Winners were announced. After the event the small gathering of Chanticleerians were able to dine together immediately after in the Admiral Room of the Hotel Bellwether.

We’ve now hosted two virtual events and are pivoting to yet another new normal where events will now be expected to be in person and virtual! We were glad to still host VCAC21 on schedule with inimitable presenters like Cathy Ace, J.D. Barker, Bradley Metrock, Dr. Janice Ellis, Jessica Morrell, Paul Hanson, and more! Many of our presenters have already contacted us about the 2022 Chanticleer Authors Conference currently scheduled for April 7-10, 2022, and we are optimistic that we will be able to host that one in person as vaccinations continue to sweep the US.

At the June 5th, 2021 Ceremonies, we are excited to recognize the 18 Fiction and 6 Non-Fiction CIBA Divisions for the First Place Category and Grand Prize Winners!

First of all, we want to thank all of the CIBA judges who read each and every entry and then comment, rate, and rank within each of the 23 CIBA Divisions. Without your labors of love for books, the Chanticleer International Book Awards would not exist. THANK YOU!

We want to thank all of the authors and publishers who participated in the 2020 Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs). Each year, we find the quality of the entries and the competitiveness of the division competitions increases exponentially. We added a new level to the judging rounds in 2019—the premier Level of FINALIST per each CIBA Division.

The CIBA judges wanted to add the Finalist Level of Achievement as a way to recognize and validate the entries that had outstanding merit but were not selected for the very few First Place Award positions within each genre division. You can order promotional stickers and such here.

A Recap of the CIBA Selection Process
- The 2020 CIBAs have 18 Fiction Divisions and 6 Non-fiction Divisions.
- First Place Category award winners were selected for each one of the 24 divisions from an overall field of titles that progressed to the Premier FINALIST Division Level from the Division Semi-Finalists positions from the Shortlists, the Long List, and the infamous beginning slush pile rounds.
- One Grand Prize award winner was selected from the First Place Category Award Winners for the 23 CIBA divisions.
- One Overall Grand Prize award winner was selected from the 24 divisions of Grand Prize Award Winners
All 2020 CIBA FINALISTS were recognized with their respective division at the CIBA awards ceremony that was held each evening of VCAC21.

PARANORMAL Book Awards for Supernatural Fiction 2020 CIBA Award Winners
The PARANORMAL Book Awards recognize emerging talent and outstanding works in the genre of Paranormal and Supernatural Fiction. The Paranormal Book Awards is a genre division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The #CIBAs).

Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs) is looking for the best books featuring magic, the supernatural, weird otherworldly stories, superhumans (ex. Jessica Jones, Wonder Woman), magical beings & supernatural entities (ex. Harry Potter), vampires & werewolves (ex. Twilight), angels & demons, fairies & mythological beings, magical systems and elements. These books have advanced to the Premier Level of Achievement in the 2020 CIBAs.

The 2020 PARANORMAL Book Awards First Place Category Winners and the PARANORMAL Grand Prize Winner were announced by Sharon Anderson on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the Hotel Bellwether and broadcast via ZOOM webinar and Facebook Live.
