Celebrating the Master of Cold War Spy Novels; John le Carré

Happy birthday tot he master of spy craft, John le Carré

As the clock ticks past October 19th, we find ourselves in the shadows of a world cloaked in espionage and intrigue. It’s a world readers first came to recognize through the masterful writing of John le Carré. As the architect of the spy novel, his words have pierced through the veils of secrecy and deception to illuminate the complex tapestry of the human motives that lie beneath the surface of geopolitics.

Raised in the Underworld, Educated with the Elites

John le Carré, born David John Moore Cornwell on October 19, 1931, lived a dangerous, and secretive life. It provided him with a wealth of inspiration for his writing, and was a reflection of his own interesting and unique life.

He grew up in Poole, Dorset, England, where his con-artist father became the primary parent when le Carré’s mother left the family when he was still a boy. But his natural talents and intellect led him to study at the University of Bern in Switzerland and later at the University of Oxford, where he excelled in modern languages.

A Double-Life

After finishing his education, le Carré worked as a spy for Britain’s foreign and domestic intelligence services, MI6 and MI5, throughout the 1950s and 60s. His experiences in Cold War espionage later heavily influenced his writing, providing him with a behind-the-scenes look into spycraft that thrilled readers from the start. His ability to take the scenarios that were whispered between spies in the shadowy corners of Europe were provocative and mysterious, earning him a reputation as the “Literary Spy Master.”

The Literary Spy Master

Le Carré breakthrough novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, was published in 1963 to critical acclaim and quickly becoming a bestseller. Today, it is often considered one of the best spy novels of all time. With plots that cleverly incorporate the thrills of cloak-and-dagger espionage tropes, his readers are kept on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

A New Kind of Spy

Le Carré is famous for his complex characters, particularly the spy George Smiley, who appears in several of his novels, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. With the intention of creating a character to rival the popular James Bond character of his contemporary Ian Fleming, he created a bookish looking, polite, and self-effacing spy whose inner cunning, excellent memory, mastery of spycraft, and occasional ruthlessness provides ample room for the unexpected when other characters underestimate him. Smily is held in high-esteem around the world, and, as Britain’s top newspaper, The Guardian, once called him, is “the sort of spy [Britain] believes it ought to have: a bit shabby, academic, basically loyal, and skeptical of the enthusiasms of his political masters.”

Le Carré’s World of Espionage

Le Carré continued to write well into his later years, publishing notable works like The Constant Gardener and A Looking Glass War. He received numerous literary awards throughout his career, including the British Book Award and the Somerset Maugham Award, and many of his novels have been adapted into successful films and television series, further cementing his influence in popular culture.

A New High-Stakes Genre

John le Carré passed away on December 12, 2020, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest spy fiction writers of his time.

Le Carré’s works continue to resonate with readers even today. His novels reflect the complexities of international politics and human relationships through cerebral and intellectual characters and his themes of morality, betrayal, and the complexities of the Cold War and post-Cold War espionage applicable to today’s genre. His body of work presents a more nuanced view of intelligence work compared to traditional spy novels, and they continue inspired more authors of geopolitical thrillers to come out of the shadows and into the light.

West, a young man, spent 15 years in prison for hacking government systems. His mother, a highly visible activist against his imprisonment, is also trying unsuccessfully to get her health insurance to pay for her fight against a deadly medical condition. In Identified West believes the government is responsible for illegally blocking her insurance and vows to find out who’s behind the effort and put his mom back on the insurance rolls.

This is no easy task. Cybersecurity is now a fully linked global enterprise called the G20S, an expansion of today’s G20 nations. Virtually every form of human activity across the world can be logged by the system. It will take a small crew of talented hackers who call themselves the Survivors to develop unique hacker tools for West to break into the system, find the guilty, and get his mother insured. At every point, success could slip out of their grasp.

Veterans Key

Spotlight on the October Awards! Don’t be Afraid!
Adventure rises. Will you answer the call?

Here are the Awards that are hungrier for your work than a horde of zombies.

Ozma Awards

Fantasy is that special world where anything can happen. We often go beyond Earth for this, looking into swords and sorcery, chosen ones and villains awash with power.

Start out with our 2021 Fantasy Grand Prize Winner A Plague of Flies by Laurel Anne Hill.

Excellent prose & description with an effective mingling of historical and fantasy elements. The tension is gripping and the pace is good.

Follow that up with From Brick and Darkness by J.L. Sullivan, a great YA Urban Fantasy.

A new Teen Favorite, this Urban Fantasy delves down passages of mythology and more when Bax Allen unwittingly unleashes a demon into the world.

Paranormal Awards

What goes bump in the night and who are the superheroes who face them? The supernatural genre often involves vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and superheroes. The characters may begin as ordinary, but they soon discover they may be extraordinary or transformed to be more than human.

We would be remiss not to crow about J.W. Zarek’s The Devil Pulls the Strings. Reminiscent of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, this book took home the Overall Grand Prize Awards.

J. W. Zarek weaves magic on the page, developing an epic, urban fantasy – first in series – readers will want to stick with for a long time. Highly recommended.

The Insane God by Jay Hartlove brings back the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft in his mystery led by a trans woman.

Sarah is cured of schizophrenia, only to face a battle with The Insane God. Her story balances humor, social issues like gender identity, and cosmic horror. Recommended!

And, of course, it never hurts to remember Stoker’s Dracula with a book like Suburban Vampire Ragnarok by Franklin Posner that won First Place in the Paranormal Awards.

Scott Campbell must face his divorce, job, and thirst for human blood, while caught in his fellow vampires’ political infighting. Recommended!

Global Thriller Awards

When you write a Global Thriller, you write about global consequences. The stakes are higher than ever before, whether or not this is a meticulously researched disease or a terrorist attack of epic proportions, you’ll want to read each one of these stories in one sitting.

Ron McManus’ The Chameleon won the 2021 Global Thriller Awards

Delightful to read with great development of story and characters. Clearly researched with a healthy dash of personal experience. A story to relish.

Then you have First Place Winner Mission: Angola by the prolific Randall Krzak. Anyone who needs a series would be wise to check this one out.

Xavier Sear is caught between dangerous factions and outnumbered in the first book of a new action-packed, tension-filled thriller series. Highly recommended!

For those who prefer more of an environmental story, check out A Divine Wind by Norman M. Jacobs, another First Place Winner.

PAST THIS POINT by Nicole Marby – Post-Apocalyptic, Romance, Contemporary Women’s Fiction

Nicole Mabry draws from her own life, the impact of a deadly snowstorm, and the subsequent shutting down of the subways to create Past This Point, an action-packed dystopian novel featuring a strong woman who seeks a way out of a world gone mad.

Karis Hylen is working in New York City a massive snowstorm shuts down the city. A total quarantine of the city becomes quarantine for half of the nation.

In the introductory chapters of this daily progression, the reader will quickly realize that Karis, with her Latino family heritage, is nobody’s fool. Karis has a strong will. Her seemingly only chance to beat quarantine’s eerie hold and join her unaffected family in California is thwarted when she isn’t allowed to take her beloved dog Zeke on the flight. She switches into survivalist mode, searching empty apartments around her for food. Along the way, she befriends a mother with two little girls still living there. They all help and bolster one another for a while – until Karis’s luck turns and she becomes even more determined to get out of the horror-infused city.

After battling several ill-intentioned men, she finds one man of character, an Englishman named Ollie, who shares her vision of escape.

Karis has always been unlucky in her relationships with men, but they both know that to remain in New York City will be their death. Luckily Zeke, who has almost developed the ability to speak in human language, approves of Ollie, who supports Zeke when the dog adopts a starving kitten they find.

Frequent phone calls with Karis’s family sustain the couple’s hopes as they face minute-by-minute struggles to get out of the now sealed-off eastern half of the US and through the medical and military checkpoints on the border. These official strictures prove almost as life-threatening as the mysterious virus itself.

Mabry is new to the world of wordsmithing but proves herself up to the challenge.

Her profession in photography has garnered awards and attention, and her prose may draw similar kudos. Like Karis, she has lived in California and New York City and has a canine companion who accompanies her on photographic forays. Readers will yearn for more of her dynamic stories – and perhaps a sequel to the questions raised in this intriguing debut offering.

We want to thank all of the authors and publishers who participated in the 2021 Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs). Each year, we find the quality of the entries and the competitiveness of the division competitions increasing exponentially. We added a new level to the judging rounds in 2019—the premier Level of FINALIST per each CIBA Division. The CIBA judges wanted to add the Finalist Level of Achievement as a way to recognize and validate the entries that had outstanding merit but were not selected for the very few First Place Award positions within each genre division.

The 2021 Chanticleer International Book Awards (#CIBAs) Overall Grand Prize and Division Grand Prize and First Place Category Winners | Part One of Three
We are deeply honored and excited to announce the 2021 Winners of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs). The Finalists were recognized at the Virtual Chanticleer Authors Conference and Awards Ceremonies, and the First Place Category and Grand Prize Winners were announced June 25th, 2022 at the luxurious Hotel Bellwether, Bellingham, Wash.

The 2022 Chanticleer Authors Conference and the 2021 Chanticleer Int’l Book Awards Banquet and Ceremony took place over June 23-26, 2022, with the CIBA Banquet happening on June 25th. Each year, Chanticleerians from around the globe come together to celebrate and cheer each other on at the annual CIBA banquet and awards evening at the luxurious Hotel Bellwether that is situated on beautiful Bellingham Bay, Washington State.

Meeting in-person for the first time since lockdown began brought such joy into our lives. The ability to celebrate, hug, and learn together with the extra space provided by the Hotel Bellwether made this a truly unforgettable experience. Champagne was poured and shared as the 2021 CIBA Grand Prize Division Award Winners were announced. Thank you to all who joined us in-person and virtually to make the CIBA Ceremonies a success!

After two virtual conferences, it was a joy and pleasure to feel the energy of an in-person crowd! The GLOBAL THRILLERS Book Awards for High Stakes Suspense Novels – the Semi-Finalists for the 2019 CIBAs
The GLOBAL THRILLERS Book Awards recognize emerging talent and outstanding works in the genre of High Stakes Suspense Thrillers. The Global Thriller Book Awards is a genre division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards (The CIBAs).

Chanticleer Book Reviews is looking for the best books featuring suspense, thrilling stories that put the balance of world power or that will end the world as we know it—High Stakes Suspense. We include with Global Thrillers the Lab Lit genre. Lab Lit is when Fiction Meets Real Science and Research or stories that are based on real science and research up to a certain “what if” point and then fiction takes over.

The coveted First Place Category Winners of the 2019 GLOBAL THRILLER Book Awards will be selected from the Semi-Finalists in the final rounds of judging. The First Place Category Winners will be announced at the Chanticleer Awards Banquet and Ceremony, which is hosted by the Chanticleer Authors Conference.

The First Place Category winners will automatically be entered into the GLOBAL THRILLER GRAND PRIZE AWARD competition. The 16 CBR Grand Prize Genre Winners will compete for the CBR Overall Grand Prize for Best Book and its $1,000 purse. First Place Category and Grand Prize Awards will be announced and recognized at the Chanticleer Awards Banquet and Ceremony on Saturday, April 18th, 2020, Bellingham, Washington. Hosted by the Chanticleer Authors Conference.
