  • SUMMER CYCLONE: Magic at Myers Beach Book 4 by Alan B. Gibson – Fantasy Romance, Urban Fantasy, Fairies

The citizens of the three fairy kingdoms clash, forced to live shoulder-to-shoulder alongside ungoverned Outliers. In Summer Cyclone, fourth book of Alan B. Gibson’s Magic at Myers Beach series, unassuming tea-shop manager Stefán tries to find love while keeping all of fairy society from fracturing.

The three fairy kings, Theos, Zsombor, and Christophe, evacuate their people to Myers Beach. It’s only here that they have any chance of recreating fairy dust after their old sources had been poisoned, and saving every fairy life. They take in the Outliers, remnants of a fallen kingdom, and at first find good will between the groups. But with thousands of fairies moving in, they have to keep everyone on a short leash or else risk humans catching wind of their new neighbors. Resentment of these strange Outliers builds.

Stefán, a close confidant to Theos, struggles to keep anti-Outlier sentiment at bay with the help of some enigmatic and knowledgeable new friends. Rumors of him giving the Outliers special treatment grow stronger as some fairies begin to suspect that he’s actually one of them.

As an orphan of asylum-seeking parents, Stefán doesn’t even know his true ancestry.

But though his responsibilities weigh heavy on him, Stefán finds a bright spot in his life. He falls for Julie, the human woman who—even as a relative stranger—offered him kindness and support while he watched over Christophe’s recently-possessed sister, Princess Zoë.

Julie herself hesitates to be honest about her feelings, a recent failed relationship fresh in her mind. They tip-toe around each other, but draw gradually closer. Stefán makes her morning coffee and teaches her to cook. Julie shares her love of skateboarding, and the adventures she and Christophe had while travelling together the past few months. And at first, they bond as they help Zoë recover despite having lost her magic and wings to the witch possessing her body.

Julie worries, however, that Stefán and Zoë are getting too close. And with nearly all of her friends now fairies, it’s easy for her to feel like she has no lasting place in their world.

All the while, a murderous figure from the past—the very man who poisoned the old fairy dust—returns to take advantage of the weakened kingdoms.

Cross-kingdom tension builds beneath the surface until the fairies are nearly erupting. Agitators push greater and greater anger at the Outliers, empowered by the fear of a ticking clock. The royals only have a few weeks left to find the final ingredient to fairy dust before their people starve.

Each time Stefán and his friends think they have a solution to one of their pressing issues, it leads to greater outcry from the populace and more opportunity for sinister forces to take control. The patience of their people wears thin, and eventually, so does the patience they have for each other. Even a loving group of friends can be made to turn on each other with the right combination of fear and magic.

But with his willingness to tackle impossible tasks, and his deep desire to understand himself, Stefán opposes the destruction of his world while easily pulling readers into his shoes.

He and Julie are both outsiders among the people they love. But neither of them lets that stand in the way when their friends need help, proving that even if they don’t have the title of fairy royalty, they have no shortage of strength or nobility.

As it brings together both old friends and old foes from across the series, Summer Cyclone explores meaningful emotional threads.

Myers Beach shines with the return of characters from previous installments, particularly the fairy royals Theos, Lily, Zsombor, and Greta. Their distinct personalities weave together and clash now that they’re a team with the weight of fairy society on their shoulders.

Julie’s just happy to have her best friends back in her life, especially as Lily and Greta reveal that she’s going to be godmother to their future fairy children. But as a human, Julie’s as far from fairy royalty as someone can be. She has no magic. No authority. And as matters of state become overwhelming, she fears she’ll be left out of her friends’ lives once again.

Stefán’s easy friendship with Theos and Alias—nearly his adoptive brothers—is tested by the conflicting demands of royalty. While they all want the same peace between the different fairy peoples, Stefán will have to learn how to navigate changing dynamics of power.

Personal relationships blend into societal strife with dire stakes. Stefán and Julie lift each other up even as they struggle with their insecurities. And as the fairy kingdoms approach a vital choice in how their way of life will change—unity or division—Summer Cyclone delivers on the promises of its preceding books with a suspenseful whirlwind romance.

  • NORTH QUEEN by Nicola Tyche – Epic Fantasy, Romance, Action Adventure

Norah Andell, Princess of Mercia and future North Queen, has been missing for three years.

Her father secreted her away to protect her from a prophesied attack in a ten-year war, but he dies shortly after their departure and takes her location to the grave. Alexander Rhemus, Lord Justice to Queen Regent Catherine, Norah’s grandmother, was told by a seer that Norah would be found in the deep forests of the Northern Kingdom, and has searched the woods ceaselessly. Having loved her since they were children, Alexander’s desperation leads him to the Wilds, a legendary and feared area where men often do not return. So opens The North Queen.

To Alexander’s shock, he finds Norah, who has no memories of her former life or even of her own name. At first, she refuses to believe she’s the missing princess, now Queen, and bristles against her newfound world and the restraints it casts upon her.

Norah struggles with a position she doesn’t want, governing a people on the verge of starvation and facing an arranged marriage to protect her people from the Shadow King, a ruthless man hell-bent on taking her kingdom.

With few choices left to save the land she feels responsible for protecting, Norah agrees to marry King Phillip of Aleon, hoping to unite against the advancing Shadowland army and fulfill a prophecy that will bring defeat to her fabled enemy. However, Norah’s life takes another drastic turn when the Shadow King kidnaps her. The longer she spends in the company of Mikael Ratha Shal, Salar of Kharav, the less sure she is of her path, and his reputation. Norah will have to make a life-defining, fate-altering decision. Will she choose herself or her kingdom?

This story centers on Norah’s search for identity.

From the first page, she is desperate to learn who she is. But the search goes beyond that. Norah must discover more than her name and her favorite food. She must find who she is as a person and the values that life experience should have given her. From her mostly well-meaning but pushy grandmother to her one-time love, she is bombarded with roles to play, which she doubts she would want in any variation of herself.

Not only must she literally relearn everything about herself, but she must also purge the world of the Shadow King.

She bears her own kingdom’s problems alongside the expectation of overthrowing another. Her old self tugs at her, a rebellious girl who wants only to run away with the handsome Alexander. However, she more keenly feels the heavy weight of duty, which cares little for her heart. She will do anything to keep her people safe, even if it means marrying a stranger. For fear of disappointing those who depend on her, Norah pushes herself to her physical and emotional limits.

Norah’s love interests foil one another, Salar Mikael and Lord Justice Alexander creating an interesting dichotomy.

Alexander is literally the “golden boy,” with his blonde hair and light eyes. He is the subject of Norah’s dreams while she is in Mercia, and they spend moments lost within a past that she can only recall in fragmented scenes. He is everything a woman could want, honorable and valiant, even though she must give him up for her contracted marriage. The past they share gives Norah an enthralling sense of home.

Mikael, the Shadow King, seems at first glance to be everything he is rumored to be, cruel, cold, and bloodthirsty. However, Norah soon begins to see the man behind the myth, a man who wants what she does – to protect his kingdom and end the war started by his father. Though he thinks her death is necessary, Mikael is surprised to see her bravery and fortitude, the spirit of a queen. Just as she struggles with this new reality, he battles to keep her at a distance.

Norah has been told to hate this man, this killer, but along with the rest of her memories, she has lost those twenty-five years of indoctrination.

Though Mikael holds her hostage, she begins to see another perspective. Their fiery battles start to feel like something more, but when Alexander reappears in her life, she falls back into confusion. This love triangle adds engaging romance to an action-packed plot and will make the reader long for the sequel.

CRIMSON FLAMES (The Crimson Series Book 2) by Ashley Robertson – Paranormal Romance, New Adult and College Romance, Vampire Romance

Chatelaine 1st Place Best in Category Blue and Gold BadgeNewly-turned vampire Abigail Tate desperately wants to protect her human boyfriend, Tyler, in Ashley Robertson’s second book in The Crimson Series, Crimson Flames.

Tyler has been accused of helping the Resistance, a rogue band of vampires who want to bring down the Council, but Abby believes in Tyler’s innocence and refuses to hand him over as the law requires. Since being turned, Abby has gained unbelievable pyrokinesis powers thanks to her mother, the powerful sorceress, and counselor to the High Council. With her burgeoning ability and the promise of much more to come, the Council agrees to give her time in exchange for her tentative help in fighting Lars, the Resistance leader and a vampire capable of harnessing the powers of darkness and death.

Abby’s loyalty to Tyler is tested when she meets Trace, a member of the High Council.

The handsome, ancient vampire can’t control his feelings for Abby, and the more she learns about Tyler’s treachery, the less convinced she becomes that he is truly innocent, making her more and more willing to give Trace a chance. As the war between the Council and the Resistance intensifies, Abby discovers truths she isn’t sure she wants to know. As her powers increase, she’s driven to connect with the spirit of her sorceress mother. But doing so leads her closer to a clash with her destiny. Will she be powerful enough to defeat the darkness?

The strength of this novel lies in the development of the main character, Abby.

Abby is part-vampire, part-sorceress, and all hero. While learning the extent of her pyrokinesis, the ability to call up an internal fire hot enough to bring down not only her vampire enemies but also entire buildings, she must also learn how to control it. As the novel progresses, so does her power. Elliot, arguably the strongest member of the High Council, has the ability to communicate with the dead, allowing them to inhabit his earthly body, and in Abby’s case, pass on much-needed information and help. When Elliot calls forth Madelaine, Abby’s deceased biological mother, he fulfills Abby’s strong desire to know the woman who passed on her unbelievable abilities. Having been raised by a human blood donor whom Abby believed to be her birth mother for most of her life, Abby’s reunion with her mother creates joy but uncertainty. This uncertainty creates the more human element of the character, showing that ultimate power doesn’t necessarily bring ultimate fulfillment.

Still, Abby is a consummate hero.

Even when it could mean her death, Abby refuses to leave anyone behind. She sees herself as a “monster” with the responsibility to care for the race to which she recently belonged. To Abby, mercy and second chances seem almost second nature. In fact, she refuses to allow anyone to harm Tyler, even though he betrayed her, until she gives him another opportunity to make things right and explain his strange behavior. She stands against the most powerful vampires in her world as long as righteousness and justice remain her goals.

A clear theme issue within the novel is trust.

Surrounded by betrayal, Abby must learn whom she can truly trust. The biggest betrayal happens, in part, before the novel’s action begins. In book one, her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend, Tyler, plays a part in the murder of Abby’s father. Though he claims not to have been aware of his treachery, everyone believes him to be duplicitous. It isn’t until later that Abby will learn the full truth, a much more complicated story than she would have ever guessed, and come to terms with all that that means in her life.

The issue of helping the High Council presents yet another trust situation. Though the Council offers the chance to “meet” the mother she didn’t know existed before her transformation, she must submit to their expectations and demands, putting herself fully within their hands and possibly committing acts she cannot reconcile with her own beliefs. When she does meet Madelaine, she once again doesn’t know how much to allow herself to trust. She repeatedly questions her mother’s motives, whether she wants to help her daughter or help the Council.

Most importantly, Abby must learn to trust herself and her new powers. It isn’t until she begins to trust in her own strength that she becomes strong enough to defeat the ultimate darkness. That confidence in oneself remains the hardest to earn and comes with the highest cost. Crimson Flame won 1st Place in the CIBAs 2013 Chatelaine Awards for Paranormal Romance books.

Magic of the Pentacle by Diane Wylie – Paranormal Romance, Fantasy Romance, Historical Romance

Richard Blackstone, aka The Mesmerist, is a successful magician working in San Francisco, but in the city of millions, he is truly alone because Richard has a secret. He is immortal. Centuries ago, as a medieval knight in King Edward’s service, Richard’s life changed when he met a traveling magician and stole an enchanted amulet that granted him immortality, magical abilities, and the power to sense others’ emotions. But magic comes with a price.

After an enemy kills his wife and sons, he sees how miserable his long existence will be and gradually becomes determined to never love again rather than feel the heartbreak of loss; but following on overnight stay in a psychiatric hospital for an incident in a bar, Richard meets a woman who challenges his long-held beliefs.

What began as a bargain to help a patient becomes so much more for Dr. Juliana Nelson. After agreeing to attend one of Richard’s magic shows, Juliana can’t keep her mind or her hands off the sexy magician who is as mysterious as his magic show, but when she learns his secret, she is uncertain whether she can believe the tale. If it is untrue, Richard should be committed, but if she allows herself to believe it, she should be committed. If he is immortal, Julianna will inevitably be forced to give him up, and she is left to wonder if love can conquer time.

One strength of the novel is the paradoxical irony of Richard and Juliana’s relationship. After spending five hundred lonely years, he has now found his love redemption with Juliana, but in order to fully immerse himself, he must let go of the family he watched die in the fifteenth century. If Richard ever wants to find happiness in his present life, he has to free himself from his past life, and Juliana may be the key to his freedom.

But can this new couple’s found love balance a future of pain and loss?

A mixture of romance, the paranormal, and historical fiction, this novel has something for everyone. Romance lovers get their literal knight in shining armor. History fans will get to experience a fifteenth-century battle in a video game style quest, and paranormal buffs will love the power of the amulet. All in all, a fine read.
