  • On the 12th Day of Christmas, Chanticleer Gave to me 12 Authors Conferences! | 12 Days of Christmas 2024

Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas – One Day at a Time

    The 12th Day of Christmas

The 12th Day of Christmas, also the last day of Christmas, is known as the Epiphany or Three Kings Day. Traditionally, gift giving was centered around Epiphany but commercialization of Christmas and a cultural desire to shorten celebrations has changed this to center around Christmas Day.  In many European and Slavic countries, children open their presents from ‘Santa Claus’ on Christmas Day, then families and friends open presents to each other on Three Kings’ Day. Three Kings’ Day, or the Epiphany, is a feast day observed by many Christians.

Below is a photo of an parade that takes place throughout Poland on Three Kings’ Day.

Carol singers in Kraków on the Epiphany

The Epiphany is often celebrated by the sharing of a King’s Cake, something also associated with Mardi Gras in the American south and in France. Baked into the cake was a coin, a bean, or a small toy and the person who found the trinket in their slice was named king for the day! Chew carefully!

Elsewhere children are encouraged to place their shoes by the door and, if they are sleeping soundly through the night, the Three Wise Men might leave them three small gifts by the morning.

On the 12th Day of Christmas, Chanticleer brings to me…

MICHELLE COX – OVERALL GRAND PRIZE AUTHOR

Near and dear to our hearts is Michelle Cox, the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as “Novel Notes of Local Lore,” a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents.  She suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there.

Her work has received multiple Mystery & Mayhem and Clue Awards from Chanticleer as well as the Overall Grand Prize Award for Best Book for her book A Spying Eye, in addition to several top-rated reviews and other accolades, so she might be on to something.  Unbeknownst to most, Michelle hoards board games she doesn’t have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music.  Also marmalade.

DIANE GARLAND – Your WorldKeeper – Continuity Senior Editor

An expert in world building and continuity, Diane Garland and her editorial company Your WorldKeeper, specializes in the world of continuity. Multiple USA Today best-selling and award-winning authors in various genres rely on her system of cataloging and organizing the minutiae and rules of their story worlds. Growing up as an AF Brat, Diane traveled extensively as a child, which has fueled her passion for travel and reading. She graduated from Florida State University and is a life-long learner. She, along with her husband and two cats, have recently relocated to Columbus, Ohio from the Seattle, Washington area.

Join Diane at her sessions about the necessity, creation, and organization of a story bible along with pointers on maintaining and using it to take your author career to the next level.

    Sessions include:

    • Creating Worlds that Last
    • Continuity and Preparing for a Series

LISA SPICER – Producer, Editor, Writer

Our local expert on Book to Screen, Lisa Spicer has worked in television, film, and video production for over 30 years as producer, writer, and editor. Starting in the documentary unit at KCTS/PBS Seattle, later on she worked on the Bill Nye the Science Guy show, earning 3 Emmys. As an independent documentary producer, she has worked in Kenya, Mexico’s Lacandon rainforest, Northern Cheyenne and Lummi Indian reservations, Boulder, Seattle,
and Bellingham. Lisa has a BA in Broadcast Journalism and certificates in Filmmaking and Screenwriting (UW). Mid-career she earned an MA in Anthropology (WWU). Integrating anthropology into documentary, she
co-produced Homeless in Bellingham, an award-winning web series and documentary, and served as Consulting Anthropologist for the feature documentary, Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie. Recently
finishing an historical novel, Radio Smokva, she’s now writing about her back-to-the-land childhood and publishing a weekly series on Substack, Collective Effervescence: Research About the Counterculture.

Lisa will lead a workshop called How to Read a Film, with a focus on enhancing your fluency in the language of film. Rooted in the practice of mise-en-scene, learn how meaning is conveyed through elements such as camera angle, set design, motif (shapes), lighting, actors, sound, all of which work together in support of the narrative.

How to Read a Film and Writing Tips & Tools with the Screen in Mind – by Lisa G. Spicer
    • Writing for the screen or with the screen in mind, whether narrative or non-fiction (documentary) film.
      • Ex: From any story, what is selected to be scripted and filmed? How is it framed (what do we see)?
      • Ex: Screenplays are written in present tense
    • As related to writing, film borrows from theater by using elements of mis en scene and motif.
      • Ex: How do theater directors use props and costume to support the narrative?
      • Writing for film or with film in mind can be informed by the craft and how films are actually made.

Ex: Basic camera terminology, used throughout entire process: writing, filming, editing.

  • Tools to Close the Gap between Storytellers and their Audience – an Innovator’s Perspective

Tools to Close the Gap between Storytellers and their Audience – an Innovator’s Perspective

When I think of “Hindenburg,” I immediately think of the disaster, when the LZ 129 Hindenburg Zepplin caught fire while docking in early May of 1937. It was the first transatlantic passenger flight of the year the famous vessel that had already flown from Germany to Brazil.

Airship LZ 129 Hindenburg Disaster on May 6, 1937.  97 onboard; 36 fatalities. New Jersey, USA

Interesting Facts about the Airship Hindenburg (sourced from the Smithsonian Magazine, May 4, 2017)

    • The Airship Hindenburg was the world’s largest airship and was roughly the size of the RMS Titanic.
    • It was to make 10 crossings from Frankfurt, Germany to America (aircraft crossings of the Atlantic were still impossible at this time).
    • The Hindenburg was moored to the ground when it caught fire.
    • The entire disaster lasted 40 seconds.
    • The mystery as to why the Airship Hindenburg caught fire remains unsolved to this day according to the Smithsonian.

As I stated previously, audiobooks and podcasts were not what I thought about when the word Hindenburg was mentioned…

That was up until last fall at the 2018 Digital Book World conference. It was there when Kiffer and I met Chris Mottes, the CEO of Hindenburg Systems for Audiobooks, Podcast Audio Editing software, and Radio Broadcast Software.

I had not thought of the cutting edge technology and communications innovators headquartered in the beautiful and ancient nordic city of Copenhagen,  Denmark—Hindenburg Systems.

    Colorful Copenhagen, Denmark

You may be confused at this point.

Why, you may ask, would a company want to be named after such a disaster?

Oh, that is a very good question!

On the ground that fateful day many observers and journalists were standing by to witness the landing of the Airship Hindenburg. Camera operators were recording the event. After all, it was 1937, things were starting to get tense. We needed something that would capture our collective attention and create a feeling of wonder.

Herbert “Herb” Morrison (May 14, 1905 – January 01, 1989), a radio journalist working for WLS in Chicago had with him the latest in technology, the PRESTO Direct Disc Recorder, to record the Hindenburg’s first landing in America.

Herbert Morrison and Charles Nehlsen with the PRESTO recording equipment.

And then things went horribly wrong.

It is Morrison’s voice we hear rising above the chaos, this one reporter whose voice and name would be forever linked to the Hindenburg disaster as he stuck with his broadcast, relaying what he was seeing until the emotional toll and the horrible smoke overtook him. It was Herb Morrison’s voice that sadly proclaimed, “… Oh, the humanity…”

Morrison was using the very latest in recording technology, the Presto, that allowed this historical account to be broadcasted and archived—at the Smithsonian. It was the world’s first recorded eyewitness news report.

This is the segue to my story:

Bringing timely and important news at record speed is what Hindenburg Systems is all about.

And that is why the Hindenburg Systems team decided on the Hindenburg moniker.

The Hindenburg Disaster marked the birth of mobile reporting and expanded the possibilities for global communication,” said Chris Mottes, CEO, Hindenburg Systems. “This is why we pay homage to the Hindenburg Disaster.”

“Radio Touches Our Hearts,” Chris Mottes, Hindenburg Systems.

Now, when I think of Hindenburg Systems, I think innovation, Scandinavian ingenuity, and a product that is both timely and necessary for today’s author (and for the Library of Congress–read on to the end of this article for more info).

After all, authors are being called upon to shoulder more and more of the burden of book discovery and marketing, whether indie-published or traditionally published. Most of us understand it’s necessary, but I’m not sure how many of us like it.

Hindenburg Systems makes the task of discoverability much easier.

Hindenburg Systems offers a platform by which authors can create, enhance, and edit their own audiobooks in the ABC Narrator. This product is not new, Libraries for the Blind have been using Hindenburg for years, and they’re not the only ones.

The same is true for the podcasting platform, Journalist Pro. Countries and organizations, schools, radio stations, colleges, and universities have been making use of Hindenburg products for a number of years, for the innovative technologies built into their systems and the ease of operation.

These are just two of the nine systems Hindenburg offers, and it was these two products that Chris Mottes and Martin Swanholm graciously awarded to our CAC19 attendees (who took his class) and the first place winners as well as our Grand Prize winners of our 2018 CIBAs.

This is Hindenburg Systems’ mission statement:
to tear down the technical divide between storytellers and their audience.

    • Every day 4 billion radio sets are turned on and tuned in. Stories are spread through the airwaves from the Artic to Antarctica. Podcasts are increasing this number.

    • From cities to rural areas. Radio gives voice to street children in Tanzania, indigenous journalists in Nepal and war correspondents covering the darkest corners of our world.

    • Radio touches our hearts.

    • The stories we hear change our perspective. Radio can strengthen communities and build nations. But despite radio being the most widespread media on the planet, there can still be a long way from storytellers to their audience.

Our mission is to close that gap! – Chris Mottes

So, when I sat down with the HS CEO the other day, I had some questions. Chris Mottes is a tall man, who speaks with a deep, accented voice. One might say he has a perfect radio voice. Charismatic and inspiring innovation aside, I thought if someone put a sword in his hand and gave him a shield, he would fill a role on the set of The Vikings rather nicely.

Chris Mottes, CEO of the global Hindenburg Systems

Being that Hindenburg Systems is a global concern, how does he do it?

Well, Mottes being a practical man, engages those who are currently working with a Hindenburg Systems product and brings them along to conferences where he exhibits his goods. The “experts” are from all over the world. When we were in Chicago, Johnathan Hurley was Mottes’ go-to guy. Hurley teaches music at a high level (over 15 years) utilizing Hindenburg Systems podcaster in his work.

We met at a greasy diner in Chicago, I believe he had the pancakes, I’m not sure what was on my plate. (Sorry Chicago! We couldn’t find the riches of your acclaimed breakfasting establishments.) Afterward, we found a gem of a coffee shop to sit and chat. The first thing I found out about Chris he is passionate about radio, coffee, rugby, and his family, not in that order.

At heart, Chris is a family man, and although his job takes him on the road nearly 80 percent of his time, he is able to recharge back in Denmark with his wife and three daughters – sometimes meeting up with them in remote locations from time to time.

Because his parents were offered work at the Royal Swazi Inn in Ezulwini, Swaziland, Chris grew up with a wider world view than most of his Scandinavian neighbors. He speaks several languages, including three Swazi dialects, and calls the world his home. When asked what his favorite places to visit are, he responds immediately: It’s a tie between South East Asia and South Africa.

Chris has been involved with several innovative companies, from noir Game Media to documentary films. But the most impressive thing Mottes told me that day was what attracts him to a business in the first place. Given that Mottes is driven to make a positive difference in the world, it’s the vision of a company that is paramount in Chris’s book. It has to be something other than making a lot of money. So, really, it is no surprise that Hindenburg Systems caught his eye and joined the team as CEO and Partner in 2011.

Hindenburg is the brainchild of CTO, Preben Friis, and Creative Director, Nick Dunkerley. Onboard as the software designer is Martin Swanholm, who along with Chris attended CAC19

    Did You Know?

The Library of Congress produces thousands of audiobooks annually using Hindenburg.

“Why did the Library of Congress choose Hindenburg?”

Prior to Hindenburg, the Library of Congress used between three to five different software packages in the audiobook
production chain, requiring highly specialized staff to serve each area. The process typically took a week of post-production per book and involved a lot of manual intervention to ensure compatibility between the different tools on the slow slog
    to completion.

In 2013, when the Library of Congress was looking for an integrated, end-to-end solution —that allowed them to record and produce a complete audiobook or magazine in a streamlined environment while improving quality and reducing the number of mistakes— Hindenburg was a natural fit.

In fact, Hindenburg had already developed an audiobook creator in conjunction with the Danish and Norwegian Talking Book Libraries that solved many of the same challenges faced by the Library of Congress.

In the end, by switching to HABC, the Library of Congress was able to introduce more flexible workflows and prepare for the future with text and audio formats like EPUB3.

What is the Hindenburg Audio Book Creator?

HABC is a modern tool for fast, end-to-end production of audio and EPUB3 books. HABC allows narrators to intuitively record high-quality books and leverage automated sound engineering.

This information that I am sharing with Chanticleerians has been gleaned from the annual Internet Trends Report, a  333-page slideshow delivered by Mary Meeker who is dubbed “Queen of the Internet.” Ms. Meeker was a renowned Wall Street analyst and is now a general partner in Bond Capital, a top echelon venture capital company that has invested in companies such as Facebook, Pinterest, Airbnb, Twitter, Stripe, Slack, Twitter, etc. Her report touches on every important internet trend that has recently taken place and what we may expect in the near future.

Ms. Meeker gave her talk on June 11, 2019, at the Code Conference 2019 held in Silicon Valley. It is considered to be the world’s premier technology conference. RECODE has made this information available online with Rani Molla’s analysis via VOX Media if you want to dig down more into the report and to hear and see the presentation.

    WHY READ THIS BLOG POST?

“Publishing is at the epicenter of digital disruption.”  Paul Michelman, MIT & MIT SLOAN

“This explains why authors and publishers feel the shocks of technology almost immediately, making publishing content the bellwether for the Internet of Things and the Digital Age.

It behooves us in the publishing industry to pay heed and close attention to digital trends if we are concerned with increasing sales and understanding the content market. ” Kiffer Brown

…Code is where the world’s most important leaders in tech are faced with hard-hitting questions and candid conversations about what’s next for their companies.

The annual by invitation-only Code Conference brings together a global community of the biggest names in the business — executive leaders and startups with bright futures — for networking and in-depth conversations.

Editor’s Note:  those presenting include: the VP of Original Content for Netflix, CEO of PBS, CEO of Amazon Web Services, Head of Instagram & Facebook, the New York Times publisher, Chairman of Goldman Sachs…

Below are the Take-Aways that I thought would be of special interest to authors and publishers. Some are not surprising but it always good to have hunches confirmed- IMHO (in my humble opinion). And there is the need of being aware of what is the latest in the tech and publishing industries since they go hand in hand. Also, there is something about seeing things in black and white…

    • The Top 2019 London Book Fair Take-Aways & Trends by Kiffer Brown

The Top 2019 London Book Fair Take-Aways & Trends by Kiffer Brown

The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film, and digital channels.

Authors, talent scouts, editors, designers, and digital gurus all walk the floor – meeting, talking, observing, discovering. The Fair welcomes over 25,000 professional visitors from more than 118 countries.

And it was a hubbub of activity and buzz as promised!  I have attended several Book Expo of America shows, but have never experienced the palpable excitement that was in the air at LBF (more on that below).

Orna Ross, the CEO of The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) that is based out of London, Great Britain, invited Chanticleer Reviews to join them at their booth at LBF 2019 when we were both exhibiting at the Digital Book World conference last October 2018. Chanticleer Reviews is proud and honored to be a vetted Partner Member of ALLi.

      The Alliance of Indepedent Authors

Since the Chanticleer International Book Awards receive many submissions from the United Kingdom and Australia, I thought that this would make a grand opportunity to meet some far away (from Bellingham) Chanticleerians in person and to make new Chanticleer friends. So Andy (my husband and CTO of Chanticleer) and I packed up a smidgen of our usual booth and headed to London on the 9 hours and 50 minutes non-stop flight from Seattle, Wash. London Book Fair here we come!

      My biggest takeaway from LBF

IS that it seems to be much friendlier and supportive of Indie authors and especially so of small-to-middle presses and publishing houses. Yes, the BIG 5  were there along with all of the major players, but they did not completely overshadow the Indies. ALLi’s exhibit space was located in an area called “Writers Block” that was a subset of the Authors’ Headquarters. The area received a lot of foot traffic that was consistent and non-stop. It was established in 2016 is growing stronger with each year.

And, yes, I was surprised to discover this even after Orna’s reassurances. But, there it is.

LBF’s experience was very unlike how my experiences were at Book Expo of America (NYC and Chicago) where I swear, the Indie presenter sessions were held under a staircase (Chicago). And at the NYC Book Expo of America, Indie’s are basically invisible or “sidelined” as IBPA stated in its Open Letter to IBPA Members (Sept. 25, 2017). I was there at the 2017 BEA and agree with IBPA’s decision. BEA granted me press passes to cover the event, and I was offered one, once again, for 2018  but did not attend. And while attending LBF, I was contacted about securing a BEA press pass for 2019. I will have to think long and hard about whether or not to go…

Now for the rest of the Take-Aways and Trends from 2019 London Book Fair

“Publishing is at the epicenter of digital disruption.”  Paul Michelman, MIT & MIT Sloan.

This explains why authors and publishers feel the shocks of technology almost immediately, making publishing content the bellwether for the Internet of Things and the Digital Age. -kb

The number one driver of book sales is still “word of mouth.”

An author/publisher should do everything possible to create “word of mouth” traction – that includes book reviews, awards, social media, book signings, book festivals, cross-promotion with other authors,  creative marketing with a unique slant, publishing non-fiction (digitally and print) small pieces, along with finding niches that you and your works will standout. – kb

Indie Booksellers continue to experience healthy growth at a rate of 5-7 percent for the past several years and this trend is expected to continue.

This trend is happening at the same time that Barnes and Noble are experiencing a double-digit decline in book sales.  https://www.forbes.com/sites/andriacheng/2018/09/06/barnes-nobles-problem-is-no-longer-about-amazon/#11e2490f44d0

“People no longer want to just read a book, they want to immersive themselves in it.”

Adipat Virdi,  Adipat is a writer/producer. He has worked on various films, TV series and plays, and designed and run the BBC Future of Content think tank across 50 BBC teams.

LBF Trends according to Publisher’s Weekly London Book Fair Daily

      • True Crime novel sales are up
      • Non-fiction sales are busier than ever (keep in mind Michelle Obama’s Becoming and all of the politically related books such as Fire and Fury)
      • Penguin Random House (PRH) dominated U.S. Bestseller Lists selling 38% of the Adult Trade Novels and a major portion of children’s picture books
      • Scholastic sales accounted for the lion’s share of Children’s Fiction
      • HarperCollins sales accounted for 17% of Adult Trade Fiction making it PRH closest competitor

“Worldwide English language fiction consumption has never been higher.” Amanda Ridout, publisher Boldwood Books (formerly with HarperCollins, and Phaidon).

The best selling book for 2018 was the runaway top seller Michelle Obama’s Becoming (PRH) with 3.4 million in sales in 2018 despite its late November release date.

There is currently a “…healthy coexistence between print and digital books…” – PRH CEO Markus Dohle

      Hollywood / Tinseltown News

Rights and Licenses across all formats, including print, digital, audio, film, and television are up because of the impact of streaming services (think Netflix, Amazon, etc.) on Hollywood’s appetite for literary materials.

A film consultant for literary agents, Georgina Capel Associates’ Simon Shaps, a panelist on Television and Film Adaptations from books suggested that authors should boil their books down to a simple slug or logline, and then produce a one-page that helps frame the story in a way that a potential filmmaker can visualize it. [London Show Daily – Publishers Weekly Wed. 13 March 2019] – We’ve been advising this approach since our first Chanticleer Authors Conference – kb

Here is a Chanticleer article about “What Works in Hollywood – the Less than 33 Words Principle.”

And the biggest trend news of LBF is…

Expect another year of double-digit growth in audiobooks.

“Audio has gone from being a sub-rights format to being thought of very much as a primary publications format.”

“Given the continued adaptation of smart speakers (Alexa, Okay Google, Siri, etc.)…and seeing our early sales so far this year, I feel optimistic apbout another year of double-digit growth.”

Amanda D’Acierno, president of Audio Group Penguin Random House

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) reports that audiobook sales are up a “robust 37.1 percent.”

Here is a link to our article “Five Reasons to Make Your Book Available in the Audiobook Format” by Kathryn Brown

      In conclusion…

The bottom line of our scoping-out trip to check out the 2019 London Book Fair was definitely worth the time and money. (London is NOT inexpensive even with the Brexit situation.) We are planning on returning for the 2020 LBF. And, I personally,  hope that the Book Expo of America will become more supportive of Indie Authors and Indie publishers. It is interesting to note that both fairs are organized by Reed Exhibitions, so maybe there is hope. Stay tuned…

Audiobooks & Podcast Technology Expert Chris Mottes to present Workshops at CAC19

The Chanticleer Authors Conference has always been about the business side of being an author—fiction or non-fiction.

And this includes keeping authors up-to-date with the latest trends in the publishing industry.

And one of the most exciting trends since e-books is the growth in audiobooks and podcasts.

These two broadcasting channels can be utilized separately or interconnected for maximum effect to increase book sales.

This is what Forbes Magazine has to say about Audiobooks and Podcasts:

Audiobooks are up 29.5% in net revenue over 2016 according to the Association of American Publishers and up 22.7% in unit sales over 2016 by the Audio Publishers Association’s estimate.”

“Audio, in general, is doing well, as podcast revenues clocked in a $314 million, still small but up 86 percent from the year before, and massive companies like Apple are promoting their voice assistant tech integrations.”

      Publishers Weekly says this:

“Audiobook Revenue Jumped 22.7% in 2018. Audiobooks continued their meteoric rise in 2017, a new report issued by the Audio Publishers Association found, with another year of double-digit growth for both audiobook sales and title output.”

And this double-digit growth in audiobooks and podcasts is why we are excited that Chris Mottes, CEO of Hindenburg Systems, will present in-depth two-hour workshops and introductory sessions on how to create audiobooks and podcasts along with how they go hand-in-hand with each other.

Chris Mottes has produced uncountable radio & TV productions, primarily documentaries,  including the Danish Broadcasting Corporation and Swedish Radio. Before joining Hindenburg Systems in 2010 as CEO, he has successfully founded several media companies along with independent production companies based out of London and  Stockholm. Hindenburg Systems is based out of Denmark but has a global reach. Click here to read about the organizations that use the Hindenburg Systems.

Five Reasons to Make Your Book Available in the Audiobook Format – The 411 Series about Audiobooks by Kiffer Brown

The Busy Booklover’s Friend – Audiobooks!

Five Reasons to Make Your Book Available in the Audiobook Format, Article # 1 in the 411 Series

      1.  Audiobooks are a great way to fit in more time for books in our busy lives!

      Audiobooks = Hands-Free “Reading”

Listen to your favorite authors’ works while you:

      • Drive
      • Commute
      • Do laundry
      • Make dinner
      • Take a walk
      • Garden
      • Rake leaves
      • Sail
      • Knit
      • Pet your cat (although Bruno, the Cat-in-Chief, requires one’s full attention)
      • Walk the dog
      • Paint your walls or just about anything
      • Pretend to nap
      • Clean the house, fill the dishwasher

Your eyes can be open or closed. Your hands can be busy (not just holding a book or flipping pages) or not.

      Hands-Free “Reading” with Audiobooks

      2. The Oral Tradition of  Listening to Stories and the Spoken Language

There is also the age-old appeal of listening to stories. We all have memories of listening to stories from our favorite auntie or uncle, or around the proverbial campfire, or our favorite radio shows (such as Lake Woebegone by Garrison Keilor or Car Talk by Click and Clack and the Tappet Brothers, the commentary from your favorite DJ, or rekindle your love of having stories read to you or (like me) experience it for the first time.

      3. Increase and Develop Vocabulary and Spoken Syntax

Listening to correctly spoken, grammatically correct language is the best way to improve our language skills—whether it is learning a new language or accent or improving one’s first language skills.

A research paper on “The Impact of Audiobooks on Reading Comprehension and Enjoyment”

      4. Hone Listening Skills and Critical Thinking Skills

The brain has to process information at the pace that the audiobook is played which gives the listener the time create and process imagery, create versions of characters, and scenes in stories – fiction and non-fiction. Keep in mind that a listener may slow down or speed up the recording.

One has to listen carefully when there are no visual cues to rely on therefore increasing retention.

      An informative article with links:

      https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/04/podcast-brain-why-do-audio-stories-captivate/389925/

      5. The Growth of Audiobooks is Correlated with the Increase of Use of Voice Assistants: “Hey Siri” (Apple), “Ok Google” (Google), “Alexa” (Amazon), “Cortana” (Microsoft), etc.

Voice assistants make the transition into audiobooks easy.

      Audiobooks & Voice Assistants
      Voice Assistants and Audiobooks

Having natural conversations with the AI and technology in our lives is becoming a normal expectation. This has opened up new areas for content. fiction and non-fiction.  The “voice first” revolution reaches new audiences while leveraging a once-in-a-century opportunity to pioneer innovative forms of content delivery and a new opportunity to monetize your content.

Did you know that Google now sells audiobooks? Those with an Android device can ask “Ok Google” to play an audiobook from your GooglePlay Library. You can ask basic questions, give the assistant a time limit for playing the recording (great for scheduling), and play it over your home speaker system if you would like.

In Conclusion – The Publishing Industry’s Digital Audiobook Revenue Is Up 32.1 percent in 2018.

According to this Forbes article, “Audiobooks now earn publishers more than mass market paperbacks—even as ebook sales fell 3.2% in 2018’s first quarter.

In this article, “…Audiobooks increased their market share by 32.1% and accounted for $98.8 million in sales in the first quarter of 2018.”

Audiobooks are the fastest growing area of publishing and have opened up vast new opportunities for publishers (and authors) to monetize their content.

Chanticleer Reviews and Technology – a love affair

From the inception of Chanticleer Reviews, technology has been our “under-the-hood” superpower under the direction of Argus Brown, CEO of Chanticleer Reviews, and uber computer geek.
