The Last Rival: A Time of Our Choosing by Kyle Palmer is a modern take on the mid-20^th century style of pulp-fiction, combining the genre’s brazen and entertaining storytelling with reflections on the deeper meaning behind all the action. This masculine romp through history dares to imagine the aftermath of World War II—in a slightly different world.

The story opens in Washington, DC, in 1946, through the eyes of a fictionalized “Wild Bill” Donovan. The real Wild Bill was an American soldier and intelligence officer, perhaps best-known for founding the CIA. Author Kyle Palmer deftly weaves such historic details into his fictionalized account of American history, offering readers a chance to learn as they come along for the ride.

From the machinations of government in Washington, DC, The Last Rival spirals into the wild resurgence of a World War II threat. The powers of the Third Reich haven’t truly been neutralized.

A highly skilled team gathers to shut down the power of the lingering Nazis, and it must be done in the greatest secrecy. The project brings together characters like rugged veteran Jim Bolden, his former commanding officer Jack Powell, and the formidable physicist (and unapologetic womanizer) Lew Weinman. This small group of hand-selected men is whisked away to rural Montana for training—where the story really ramps up.

As their mental and physical resolve is tested, personalities clash. But in the shadow of their common enemy, the men seem to unite as they learn more about what it will take to bring down this final threat.

With the training in Montana complete, they travel south, taking on a cross-border journey to their harrowing destination.

Along the way, Palmer brings up fascinating relics of the past, like “bat bombs,” incendiary devices strapped to hibernating live bats developed but never used during World War II. These strange-but-true historic details lend realism to a story that can veer toward the fantastical with the sheer bombast and undeterred strength of the main characters pushing past the realm of believable heroics.

As the men close in on their target, they tangle with growing trouble and excitement. They’re assisted by a short list of allies, including two women who’ve been biding their time in Nazi country until help could arrive. Readers meet many more such characters who add complexity to the story.

The Last Rival propels toward a climax of total action, complete with twisting loyalties.

In some ways, the book’s denouement is its most lingering element. No end is left untied; every character has a clear finale, happy or not. But rather than wrapping things up summarily, Palmer leaves his characters with a fascinating reflection on philosophy and religion, calling back to earlier moments in the book. It’s such thoughtful and surprising moments of insight that set Kyle Palmer’s The Last Rival apart from its simpler pulp-fiction predecessors.

QUANTUM CONSEQUENCE: Physics Lust and Greed Series Book 5 by Mike Murphey – Time Travel, Action & Adventure, Satire

Quantum Consequences, the fifth book in the Physics, Lust, and Greed Series by Mike Murphy, mixes conflicts from the past, present, and future as a group of time travelers clash over the fate of multiple worlds.

Marta and Marshall have to protect Baptiste, a child living under the rule of his mother’s abusive boyfriend, Ignace Aguillard. When their friend Cecil is murdered, Baptiste inherits his money and stake in a secret governmental facility beneath the Arizona desert, the Historical Research Initiative Complex. To keep that money out of Aguillard’s hands and confirm whether Aguillard truly killed Cecil, Marta and Marshall take Baptiste to the HRI, revealing its true nature as the hub of interdimensional time travel.

Meanwhile, a team of assassins and former HRI personnel, Gillis, Lexi, and Elvin, are instructed by a future version of Lexi to kill John Dexter– Lexi’s bitter ex and future higher-up in the dystopian Christian Fundamentalist States of America. They break into the HRI, now seemingly abandoned, to figure out whether they should take the job.

But the two groups run into much greater trouble than just each other.

A paramilitary squad under the employ of Amazon, a set of AI with delusions of grandeur, and even the metaphysical custodians of the quantum corridor upon which time travel trespasses try to flex their will over the HRI. All the while, an even more mysterious force orchestrates murder and corporate-political schemes, working in the shadows of the future.

True to its name, Quantum Consequences brings together a menagerie of storylines from earlier in the series, as the characters’ time-traveling work catches up to them. This complex story is skillfully wrangled as each action echoes onward to cause problems further down the line. Marshall suffers the mistakes of cosmic bureaucracy that leave him with a body from another universe, Marta’s alternate self flees from the authorities, and John Dexter tries to guide his past self to escape from mob ties and secure his political power in the future.

This story shares its infinite universes through engaging characters and a strong sense of humor.

Even as they reckon with the power to change the past, these characters remember their human ties, joking with, protecting, and loving the people who connect them to the world. Although time travel wipes away much of their memories, enough remains for them to slowly build a sense of the greater powers at play.

This use of time travel allows author Murphey to create moments of great tension, but also hilarious coincidences and well-executed dramatic irony. The story twists in wonderful and unexpected ways as different character perspectives show readers entirely new angles on events that seemed simple at first.

Quantum Consequences will draw readers in with grounded conflicts that get to the heart of characters like Marshall, Marta, and Baptiste, then expand to otherworldly concerns with entire universes at stake, and ultimately return to see these characters confront the issues weighing on them.

An excellent mix of satire, humor, and drama breathes life into this sci-fi adventure.

Tongue-in-cheek political commentary connects the events of this strange future to those of our modern day, and though Quantum Consequences doesn’t shy away from dark subject matter in its conflicts, running jokes and ridiculous situations keep the tone light throughout.

While this comedic tone is occasionally strained by the contrast with cruel villains, it holds up very well throughout the finale. As disparate conflicts come crashing together deep in the HRI, flashes of action and vital decisions shape an ever more intense story for this series.

AIR BOAT: Love is an Adventure (Book 1 of the Special Forces Connection) by Jacek Waliszewski – Romance, Action & Adventure, Suspense

For readers interested in a unique romance, Air Boat: Love is an Adventure by Jacek Waliszewski offers a distinctive cast of characters and tense excitement in the sky.

Air Boat brings together a former Special Forces soldier, Luke, who prefers to keep to himself, an independent and sarcastic female pilot, Stella, and a three-legged Husky named Saint who marches to the beat of his own drum. These captivating characters embark on a fast-paced, page-turning tale.

Author Jacek Waliszewski starts this romantic adventure with a suspenseful scene of a vintage plane barreling towards the Twin Cities, accompanied by two F-16 fighter jets, before setting the stage for the two main characters to meet. The mystery of this scene will stick in the reader’s mind, drawing them forward with stark curiosity that only grows in excitement.

Saint, the wandering Husky mix, brings these two together, with sparks quickly flying between their strong personalities. Luke is not one to share much about his personal life or history, but the wounds Stella sees on his shoulder indicate trauma from his time deployed with the Green Berets. Unlike some common counterparts in a romance, Stella is a strong, competitive woman who is not likely to fall for anyone – nor give them the last word.

After the two spend some time together (axe throwing at a local bar), Luke takes Stella up on an offer to learn to fly the small commuter planes that Stella and her father, Pierre, use for their airboat business of ferrying people across the west (Montana, Alaska, and Minnesota are some of the locales). As the attraction between Luke and Stella grows, an opportunity to fly together turns into a terrifying situation which brings the story full circle.

This adventure romance has fine detail and intrigue, as the author draws from his own time as a Green Beret.

Air Boat is an exhilarating and fast-paced adventure that romance and adventure fans will love.

The story will continue, as Air Boat is the first in a five-part Special Forces Connection series, two of which will be coming out in 2024. Readers will eagerly await more by Jacek Waliszewski.

WAGES Of EMPIRE by Michael J. Cooper – Historical Fiction, WWI, Action & Adventure
Michael J. Cooper’s latest historical fiction novel, Wages of Empire, draws readers into the perilous journey of sixteen-year-old Evan Sinclair and his father into WW1. On this path, their lives will intersect with such historical figures as TE Lawrence, Gertrude Bell, the Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann, the Arab nationalist Faisal ibn Hussein, the proto-Nazi and advisor to the German kaiser Guido von List, and Kaiser Wilhelm II himself.

Set in the summer of 1914 we find Evan living in the American southwest where his father moved the family from England for his Oxford sabbatical. Evan struggles to cope with his mother’s death in childbirth and yearns to escape his father’s controlling grip. As war breaks out in Europe, Evan decides to leave home and join the fight, without telling his father.

By the time Clive realizes Evan is missing, the war is in full swing. Clive returns to England to search for Evan and reactivates his commission at the War Office in London. There, Clive uses every means available to find Evan. Meanwhile, Evan has made his way across the Atlantic and into France with the hope of joining the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), but instead he is arrested by the Paris police as a possible German collaborator. He escapes, but by mistake, crosses into occupied Belgium where he barely survives a German artillery barrage with poison gas. Joining the Flemish resistance, he is badly wounded after helping to flood the lowlands, a deciding factor in stopping the German army. After recovering in a BEF hospital in France, Evan begins a romance with a beautiful young nurse just before he is discharged to return to England by hospital ship.

Cooper masterfully weaves a compelling narrative that includes fictional and historical characters with high stakes in the conflict. Wages of Empire takes us from Whitehall in London to the Western Front in Flanders, where we glimpse a world of imperial power where massive casualties result from outdated military tactics in the face of new wartime technologies. Cooper also provides an intimate look into the German Kaiser’s machinations in the conflict and his intentions for the Holy Land.

The Kaiser, who anticipates victory in the war, has sent his agents to facilitate his rule in Jerusalem as Holy Roman Emperor with dominion over Arabia’s rich oil reserves and control of the Suez Canal. And from his throne on the Temple Mount, he plans to extend a vision of German-Nordic racial supremacy throughout the world. Woven into this challenge, we glimpse a covert fellowship of Guardians of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. This mysterious and clandestine community is aware of the Kaiser’s intentions and dedicated to stopping him.

With gripping tension, Cooper keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the stakes are raised with each turn of events. Will Evan and Clive be reunited? Will they survive the war? These questions and more are left echoing in the reader’s mind long after the story’s conclusion.

COURSES Of The CURSED: A Curtis Jefferson Novel by Vince Bailey – Paranormal, Dark Fantasy, Action & Adventure

This complex work twists its way through a maze of interconnected storylines and characters who each, in their own way, embody the age-old battle between good and evil.

Ezra, an old Apache shaman, embodies something horrible and ancient. Whether he is Satan or some malicious pagan entity, he facilitates the cruelty done to the characters in the novel. However, upon closer examination, Ezra’s “evil” becomes much more complicated. While he tortures Ray and sometimes takes the form of an enormous would-be rapist were-coyote, he is also the voice of a long-dead, long-forgotten people, innocents slaughtered in a sick game of commerce.

Ezra does unforgivable harm, but he does so in the name of justice, begging the question of whether justice can be achieved through bloody vengeance.

The idea of justice defines many characters, including Lieutenant Roy, the cavalry commander who refused to serve out the original retribution for which Ezra fights. In opposition to Ezra’s malignancy stands Isabel Cienfuegos, Ray’s aunt. She serves as foil to all that Ezra represents and becomes an avenging angel, toting a 12-gauge instead of a fiery sword.

Numerous other characters strive to do good in the world around them.

Vince, the narrator, admits that his faith is the very reason he must tell the story. Leon and Georgy, fellow inmates of Curtis, drag him to church to pray for guidance and courage for what lay ahead, leading the reader to question if Curtis’s actions are divine justice, or if he is merely a pawn in Ezra’s plan.

The symbology of fire frames this story.

If Ezra is – or is in league with – the devil, the use of fire is a pointed reference to the retribution forced upon those who have done wrong in life. However, when Ray receives his blood money from Ezra, Isabel throws it into a fire to rid them of the thing that led to Ray’s abduction and torture. The fort’s original inhabitants were complacent in the massacre of the tribe, so when it partially burns down, the flames cleanse part of that history. Ray uses fire as a healer, to help him rehabilitate after his disfigurement at Ezra’s hands.

But fire takes its most questionable form when a beloved character, a “knight” in search of justice, is set ablaze by Ezra. Fire here is only a punishment, wrought on someone who has done nothing to deserve it. The role of fire, just like that of good and evil, is a complicated one with a multitude of interpretations.

Courses of the Cursed asks what sort of justice can come from vengeance, and what really will bring peace to the past. A thrilling paranormal adventure that we highly recommend!

This story centers on Norah’s search for identity.

From the first page, she is desperate to learn who she is. But the search goes beyond that. Norah must discover more than her name and her favorite food. She must find who she is as a person and the values that life experience should have given her. From her mostly well-meaning but pushy grandmother to her one-time love, she is bombarded with roles to play, which she doubts she would want in any variation of herself.

Not only must she literally relearn everything about herself, but she must also purge the world of the Shadow King.

She bears her own kingdom’s problems alongside the expectation of overthrowing another. Her old self tugs at her, a rebellious girl who wants only to run away with the handsome Alexander. However, she more keenly feels the heavy weight of duty, which cares little for her heart. She will do anything to keep her people safe, even if it means marrying a stranger. For fear of disappointing those who depend on her, Norah pushes herself to her physical and emotional limits.

Norah’s love interests foil one another, Salar Mikael and Lord Justice Alexander creating an interesting dichotomy.

Alexander is literally the “golden boy,” with his blonde hair and light eyes. He is the subject of Norah’s dreams while she is in Mercia, and they spend moments lost within a past that she can only recall in fragmented scenes. He is everything a woman could want, honorable and valiant, even though she must give him up for her contracted marriage. The past they share gives Norah an enthralling sense of home.

Mikael, the Shadow King, seems at first glance to be everything he is rumored to be, cruel, cold, and bloodthirsty. However, Norah soon begins to see the man behind the myth, a man who wants what she does – to protect his kingdom and end the war started by his father. Though he thinks her death is necessary, Mikael is surprised to see her bravery and fortitude, the spirit of a queen. Just as she struggles with this new reality, he battles to keep her at a distance.

Norah has been told to hate this man, this killer, but along with the rest of her memories, she has lost those twenty-five years of indoctrination.

Though Mikael holds her hostage, she begins to see another perspective. Their fiery battles start to feel like something more, but when Alexander reappears in her life, she falls back into confusion. This love triangle adds engaging romance to an action-packed plot and will make the reader long for the sequel.
