  • A very personal MEMORIAL DAY blog post from Kiffer Brown

A very personal MEMORIAL DAY blog post from Kiffer Brown

This particular Memorial Day is especially meaningful to me because of my beloved mother’s, Antha Mae,  passing this past Friday on May 26, 2017. My mother was proud to be a serviceman’s wife.  My father retired after 36 years of service in the Unites States Merchant Marines & Marine Corps where he served in the WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He died in 1981 from one hundred percent service related injuries.

Momma, as I have always called her, accompanied Daddy on his Stateside tours of duty. She has lived in Tuscon, Calif.; Camp Pendleton, Calif.; Honolulu, Hawaii (when it was a territory); and Camp Lejeune, NC while raising two children on and off military base housing. She has traveled by old propeller planes, trains, naval transport ships, and has driven (Daddy never drove) cross-country several times with her children in tow as a dedicated military spouse and mother. She enjoyed meeting the other military wives who came from all over United States and from around the world representing different cultures, languages, and religions. Toni was known to be someone who the other servicemen’s wives could turn to in difficult times along with relying on her friendship and camaraderie in adjusting to military base-life.

My older brother Tony, Daddy, and me in Hawaii back in the territory days. My mother is taking the photo.

Momma spent countless nights and days worrying over Daddy’s safety when he was away on maneuvers, sometimes trying to survive in foxholes, and at one time living in underground tunnels in the DMZ zone in Vietnam (Dad was proud to be a Recon Marine). There were big chunks of time when she was left alone with the care and raising of my brother and me because of spotty correspondence from him due to security issues and slow mail service. When Dad came back from Vietnam, he was a different man–a changed man–and not for the better. He suffered from post traumatic stress (PTSD) and so she suffered along with him from the aftershocks of what he experienced. Our family life changed dramatically. Dad always tried to bury his PTSD and he never talked about what he had experienced while fighting. He tried to keep an “even keel” and “buck-up.”  Semper Fi.

“I went away to war one person and came back another, and in my wildest dreams would never have chosen to be the one who came back.” – Christopher Oelerich, who relates his own personal history, beginning from when he was drafted into the military during the Vietnam War, and continuing through his return to civilian life and his own rocky road to recovery in his memoir, Merry Christmas and Happy PTSD.

My mother, like many military spouses, raised my older brother Tony and me alone for much of the time. She fluctuated being uprooted from the two very different lifestyles: military housing and the civilian environment. But through all the ups and downs, my mother was always proud to be his wife, a wife of a United States Marine.

Our father passed away in 1981. Our mother never remarried.

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” – President Harry S. Truman.

To this sentiment, I would like to add a note of great appreciation to the spouses (male and female) of the heroic and valiant men and women who have served in the United States of America’s military service–those who try to  make a home while constantly being constantly uprooted, who raise the children alone for long periods at a time, and who vigilantly pray for the safe return of their loved ones. My heart goes out to the many spouses whose loved ones did not come back and for those whose loved ones who came back injured physically, emotionally, and/or mentally.

Some statistics worth repeating regarding U. S. Veterans*:

    • 22 veterans, on average, commit suicide every day.
    • The suicide rate for younger veterans (18 -29) is 7 times higher than their civilian peers.
    • The rate of suicide among veterans is 21 percent higher than the rest of the country.
    • The  suicide rate of among female veterans is a 140 percent higher than their civilian peers.
    • No one knows how many military spouses and families members commit suicide, but the number is suspected to be quite high.
    • There are 18.8 million veterans living in the United States.
    • 3.8 million of these veterans are disabled (2014).
    • U.S. military is the world’s second largest (China’s army is the largest) and troops are deployed across the globe.
    • It is believed that 45 percent of all veterans who served in the Middle East are disabled.

Here are three ground breaking books that we have reviewed that may be a valuable resource to those who have served or who have loved ones who have served in the US military or are family members of military veterans.

    Memorial Day Post

I write this post in memory of my mother, Antha Mae (Toni) Pace who was proud to be the wife of a Marine and the mother of his children. She passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the age of 87 years.

My mother enjoying ice cream about a year ago at Nicky’s in Bellingham, Wash. She is missed dearly.

January 28th heralds the New Year according to the Traditional Chinese  Calendar

This is the Year of the Rooster!

As your confidence increases, you will make new connections that will expand your readership.

If your sign is a Pig:

If you are published, this is your year to succeed and achieve! Be sure to schedule many author signings and book fairs/ This is your year to promote your books. Remember each new reader counts! Your imagination and creativity will give your entrepreneurial spirit a competitive edge.

  • Gift Ideas for Writers from Chanticleer Reviews (and a special holiday discount!)

Gift Ideas for Writers from Chanticleer Reviews (and a special holiday discount!)

It’s that time of year, the annual dilemma of what gift to get your favorite author…or the annual dilemma of how to suggest to your family and friends what author-ly gifts you really want this year. Or maybe you are looking for something special to gift yourself this year? We are gonna make it easy–if you are the gifter then use this post as your guide, if you are the giftee, forward this post on to your family and friends as a not-so-subtle hint.

Of course, the old stand by is a notebook and pen, but anyone whose been a writer for any length of time probably has a secret horde of pens and notebooks and other stationary fetishes, and may have had too call a moratorium on the acquisition of more writing implements. Once that happens, it is important to start getting creative. Though, let’s face it–creativity is a key component for giving a gift to a person whose whole life revolves around creativity!

There are so many articles out there already–we really should start with a few of these great resources:

And now we are adding to the already abundant repertoire on the subject (plus throwing in a few bonuses as our gift to gift givers!)

    1. An editorial book review

Do you know an author who has published a book or will be publishing a book within the next year? One of the best tools for boosting the success of a book is having an honest and objective editorial book review (what is an editorial book review?). If the book is not published yet, quotes from an editorial review can be used for cover blurbs, and once the book is published it will lend a great deal of legitimacy that can help readers make the decision to buy the book. It is also an expense that, after paying for editing, cover design, printing, etc. an author may have a difficult time fitting into their budget. If the author in your life has a hard time buying it for themselves, why not buy it for them? (some of these gifts require uploading manuscripts, so if you don’t have access to that check out the gift cards in #6).

    2. A manuscript overview

Is your favorite writer struggling with the first draft of their novel, or do they need a fresh set of professional eyes? A manuscript overview is one of the first steps of the editing process that publishing houses will use to make sure that the overall story and structure is sound. It’s an evaluation to give the author a sense of where they are strong and where they need work in their story, giving them a guide for how to tackle editing the book. It’s a step indie authors sometimes miss out on. Help out the author in your life by gifting them a manuscript overview.

    3. A Book Award

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just give a book award to the author in your life? Well, it doesn’t work that way, but we have the next best thing–a contest entry! It’s also a good low budget option if you started reading this article thinking of just buying a pen and some paper, and the prices on the first two options were way out of your league. Our Chanticleer International Writing Contests and Book Awards come with all kinds of goodies for winners, including a free review, a blue ribbon, digital badges, and even cash for the grand prize winners. The odds are better than a scratch and win ticket if the book is well written and well edited! Why not do something nice for the author in your life and enter their book into our writing competitions!

    4. An Author Conference

The Chanticleer Author Conference is an exceptional gift idea for the author in your life. And it’s not your typical authors conference. This is the one for the author who knows everything there is to know about writing craft and now just needs to know how to sell their darned book. We teach actual business skills necessary for any author looking to build an audience and boost their success. And if they won one of our book awards, a ticket to our Awards Gala to walk up to the podium and accept their award is part of the conference package! Buy the author in your life some extra business skills with a ticket to the Chanticleer Authors Conference.

    Special Bonus Gift!

Now through midnight on December 31, 2016, we are offering $50 off the current Early Bird rate for the Chanticleer Author Conference for a limited time.

Purchase your conference package with the code 50CAC1716 before December 31st.

    5. Promotional Stickers Stocking Stuffers

If the author in your life already has an award or a book review from Chanticleer stuff their stocking with a new pack of “Award Winner” stickers to put on their books. Every little thing to make their book stand out on the bookstore shelf will increase book sales. We conveniently have an entire line up of stickers for every type of winner and reviewed book. Put your sticker order in soon! (sorry it might not get there in time for Christmas at this point…but just don’t put the stockings away when you take down the decorations…)

    6. Gift Cards from Chanticleer Reviews!

A brand new feature that people have been asking for and we have finally created. Chanticleer Reviews now has gift cards! Order them for the author in your life today! Send us an email with the subject “Purchase a Chnticleer Gift Card” to chanticleer@chantireviews.com.

Thanks for checking out our holiday gift ideas! We love helping authors boost their success. If you are thinking of buying one of these items for the author in your life and need help deciding. Please send us an email with the subject “Help me buy the perfect gift from Chanticleer!” to chanticleer@chantireviews.com.

Here in the northwest corner of the U.S., it’s like we invented our own Instagram filter called NorthWest Gothic. The skies are gray and low, winds bluster up out of nowhere, and blackberry bushes reach their skeletal arms closer and closer to the back porch. A dark, moody and claustrophobic theme settles over the landscape.

And yet there are so many things to be thankful for. Being together with family and friends. Having a good meal and a relaxing evening (or not if you’re participating in NaNoWriMo and you’re behind in your word count). Being…indoors.

At Chanticleer we are most thankful for books and literacy. Somehow, it means a little more to have gratitude for things that not everybody in the world–or even in our local communities– have access to. We encourage everybody to learn more at the World Literacy Foundation, and also to donate or volunteer time to a literacy program in your local community. Give the gift of reading!

And for those of you who want to literally give a book as a gift this holiday season–or just curl up next to the fire to read a book, as you pop a button on your pants to make more room for the completely ill-advised quantity of turkey and mashed potatoes you just consumed–here is a handpicked cornucopia of recent favorites in our collection of reviews.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_4″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]wlf-logo-web-300x300

    Veterans Day Post
    Veterans Day Post

Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s military veterans  and active military members for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of the United States of America.

Honoring those who are serving, have served, and those who have fallen while in military service is a tradition here at Chanticleer Reviews.

Some statistics regarding U. S. Veterans*:

    • 22 veterans, on average, commit suicide every day.
    • The suicide rate for younger veterans (18 -29) is 7 times higher than their civilian peers.
    • The rate of suicide among veterans is 21 percent higher than the rest of the country.

    • It is believed that 45 percent of all veterans who served in the Middle East are disabled.

    Three Ground-breaking Books

Here are three ground breaking books that we have reviewed that may be a valuable resource to those who have served or who have loved ones who have served in the US military or are family members of military veterans.

ptsdMerry Christmas and a Happy PTSD by Christopher Oelerich, author & Vietnam Veteran

“A very personal, no-holds-barred yet ultimately empowering discussion of PTSD and its effects on those who suffer from it.” – CBR

The book has been written in a ‘How To’ format for combat soldiers which is reflected in examples and language.

“I went away to war one person and came back another, and in my wildest dreams would never have chosen to be the one who came back…I was a twenty year old Warrant Officer Helicopter Pilot fresh out of flight school when I arrived in South Vietnam in May of 1969 and was assigned to B Troop 7/17 Air Cav in Pleiku.  I joined the Scout Platoon and spent my entire tour as a Scout Pilot in the Central Highlands, and in that time saw my friends killed, captured, wounded and lose their minds. “

lob-cover-image-198x300Life on Base: Quantico Cave by Tom and Nancy Wise

Life On Base is a is a riveting portrayal of the lives of children (who call themselves “military brats”) whose parents serve in the armed forces.

As the child of a United States Marine, I grew up in ways most American’s will never have the opportunity to experience.

The difference is in the details. We looked both ways before crossing a tank path in the woods and collected spent bullet casings in the long abandoned trenches. We waved to the MP’s, not the police, and our parents shopped at the commissary and PX, not the grocery store and department store. When playing sports, we stopped mid-stride at the sound of the evening trumpet call and stood at attention while the flag was retired. Then there was the rare time out as a helicopter landed in the middle of the ball field.”

A fun post for Military Brats: 25 Signs that you grew up as a military brat.

Wounded Warrior, Wounded WifeWounded Warrior, Wounded Wife by Barbara McNally

A ground-breaking initiative, Wounded Warrior, Wounded Wife, by Barbara McNally, offers advice and hope to those who are trying to understand and cope with war’s many aftershocks.

“The critical issues surrounding post-traumatic stress among America’s wounded warriors is expanded here to include the challenges and concerns of military wives and families.

Barbara McNally was working as a physical therapist when she watched helplessly as a man jumped off a bridge to his death. Feeling involved in his tragedy, she learned he was a wounded veteran. The experience spurred her to find out more about PTS and its effects on those who have participated in war. Gradually her attention focused on the plight of the wives of these wounded military survivors.”

If you have a moment, take time to watch this video that offers an intimate look into the chaotic and demanding lives of military spouses as they adjust to living with mentally and physically injured combat veterans. Please feel free to share.

I have too many memories from my childhood (Vietnam War era) dreading the sight of the roving green car that delivers death notifications. These official cars seem to be always circling the base housing neighborhoods. All of us kids would be secretly praying that it wouldn’t stop at our place. Yes, military brats have a very different childhood from the “civvies” – for sure.

Thank you for taking the time to read my annual Veterans Day blog post. Semper Fi!

REAL-LIFE GHOSTBUSTERS Discover What Goes Bump in the Night at Author’s Farmhouse by Sharon Anderson

    Anonymous by Christine Benedict

Anonymous, a riveting story based on a real-life grab-the-seat-of-your-pants thrill-fest by Chanticleer First Place Clue Award-winning author, Christine Benedict, is making news! Her hair-raising novel is based on the real-life incidents that  she and her husband experienced  when they lived in a haunted 1875 farmhouse.

It all started the day she and her husband moved into the 14-room farmhouse with only a few of the rooms in livable condition. Her husband worked hard and socialized with his brothers while she stayed at home with the baby, trying to discern if she was going insane like her mother, or truly was hearing footsteps on the floor above… when no one else was at home. Benedict puts her character, Debra, into  some of the same horrifying situations she lived through, from thinking the house is haunted to thinking she might be inheriting her mother’s insanity, and to receiving explicit and terrifying letters from a stalker.

With a new plot twist around every corner, the author delivers a complex story of obsession and jealousy that will keep the reader turning page after satisfying page. Christine Benedict’s Anonymous hits all the marks for an engrossing, edge-of-your-seat read.

The Northern California Independent Bookseller Association (NCIBA) and the Mountain & Plains  Independent Bookseller Association (MPIBA) Fall Discovery Shows and PNBA shows exhibit spaces are sold out, but Chanticleer managed to procure tables and will be displaying vetted books by Chanticleer Reviews.

It can be difficult to get tables at trade shows, especially for individual Indie authors, and it is expensive to register for and travel to show shows. Chanticleer Reviews Collection helps today’s best books to become discovered by librarians and book sellers at a fraction of the cost along with the prestige of being associated with a vetted collection of Indie books.
